Question about Marshall MXL990 Professional Microphone

Open Question

I've had my MXL 990 Condenser mic for only about 4 months. I haven't dropped it, banged it around - nothing! Also, my XLR cords are not damaged (to my knowledge) or have shortages in them. However, when I plug my Mic into my brand NEW Acer Laptop, and push record on my music programs (both Audacity & Cool Edit Pro) the recording sounds all distorted and Robot-Alienish. I thought it was because of the Integrated Mic on my laptop, but i'm not sure. I plug the mic directly into my microphone plug in (next to the headphones/stereo input) & on my old laptop (dell) it worked PERFECTLY fine. Yes, i have phantom power, and i yes, i also have all my cords plugged in correctly. Am i doing something wrong, or is there anything i need to fix? Does anyone have a solution as to what could be wrong?

SOURCE: MXL 990 has really low output

These are really cheap mics! I have two dozen of them because what I do requires the mic to be expendable. The capsule is pretty fragile and just a little drop or hit to the mic can drastically alter the frequency response and output level. If you record with it and it has a hollow sound I would bet this is what happened. If you can generate white or pink noise out of your system, then record it. Just hold the mic in front of the speaker. Play it back and compare the tone of the recording to what you just heard. Hollow? There you are!

Phantom power comes in different voltages. Make sure your power supply is delivering enough. Also make sure that your mike cable is wired properly. 1 is ground or shield. 2 is hot or Ve+ and 3 is cold or ve- If 1 and 3 are bridged for unbalanced use or if you have a short it won't work and will probably damage the mike or the power supply. I think the power supply needs to be 48 volts and you have to use the stereo XLR cord that is recommended for it. I hope this helps.

Check the input and output settings. Look in the preferences or settings menu for "i/o settings" or "i/o setup." You're going to set it from the default internal mic input to this one. It sounds like it may be that simple.

Are you using the original cable for the mike? In order to use phantom power the XLR connectors have to be wired in balanced configuration. Pins 1,2 and 3 must be wired separately. If you use a cable with 1and 3 connected you could damage the phantom power supply and in some cases the microphone.

No sound from mxl 990 condenser mic

From the Micropower PS400 product description it states:

"routes the microphone signal to a mixer or a microphone preamplifier."

• these is just a phantom power supply.

One reason your former setup is OK , is that

tascam m-50 is a mixer preamplifier.

• phantom power supply is just a part of the mic preamp of the mixer

990 mxl condenser mic rattles

Not supposed to rattle. Sounds like it may have been dropped. Very delicate parts inside these comdenser mics. Even blowing into them can damage them. Maybe you could get luck to find a screw that vibrated lose if you carefully disassemble the unit. Or you can take it to your local music store/ electronics repair shop and have them repair it.

I just purchased a MXL 990 condenser mic. I am pissed. I get home and hook it up to my Toneport UX2 and turn phantom power on and I literally get nothing. I don't get it.

Can't operate my MXL 990

If it is an MXL 990 Condenser that comes in the grey case with a shockmount and a black hard mount I can solve your problem. (If it is USB I know nothing about that unit).

This MXL 990 microphone MUST have 48v phantom power in order to operate. If you aren't familiar with the term phantom power read the first link:

Phantom power - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_power
MXL User Guide - http://www.mxlmics.com/support/guides.html

If yours is one of the older MXL 990's it should have an XLR connector on the bottom -
XLR Defined - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XLR_connector

Your mixer (I am guessing its a Peavey, Tascam, Mackie) or something entry level like that may or may not have phantom power. I am guessing not. But if it does, it will have a switch that says 48v phantom power and most likely a green or red LED next to it to show you when its on. This mic will NOT work without phantom power.

Best suggestion: Verify that your mic is the MXL 990 Condenser, if it is it needs 48v phantom power. Check your mixer and see if it has 48v phantom power. The only computer soundcard that I know of that is used by a lot of folks is the M-Audio Delta 1010LT. It has XLR inputs but NO phantom power on it.

There's your answer.

Problems with my MXL 990

Sounds like the frame of the microphone itself has become ungrounded. You could try VERY
carefully disassemble the mic and check for a bad ground or a bad wire connecting to the mic
body.
