Hi magercarl

this is a very common problem with your model gps

the following advice pertains to the following magellan gps systems.

Magellan 800, 860, 2000, 2200t, 2500, 3000, 3050, 3100, 3140, 4000, 4040, 4050, 5310 and 6000t

i fix these and many other magellan gps daily so when considering my advice , please understand i do not google my solutions.

assuming your car charger is working (the little green light is on) and your magellan still wont start up after holding the power button while its plugged in for up to ten seconds and still does not start..read below

this is actually a very common problem with these magellan power ports...they are poor quality from the factory and always and i mean always fail..the new ports that you find on ebay are 100% better then the factory port.

if your able to replace that power port yourself, you can get one HERE, if not, ask the fellow that sells them for help.

due to some dubious "experts" on fixya, im not permitted to help you directly, but please follow the link above to get further help.

let me know if you need more help or info

The unit runs Ok for a few minutes and then shuts down.

Does it do this on just battery power or with an external power source? If on battery poer, then the battery if defective.

UNIT WILL SHUT ITSELF OFF WHEN IN USE SOMETIMES AFTER 10 MINS SOMETIMES TURN BACK ON AND IT WORKS AGAIN SOMETIMES WON'T COME BACK UP FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS

I suspect that the power supply is not making a proper connection and comes loose in the socket, the gps unit then is forced to use battery power but since the battery is not fully charged yet when the battery power is to low the unit shuts down and will stay down till enough of a charge or the power supply gets bumped and makes a solid connection again.

Our nextar gps said we did an illegal function and shut down

Look for a small hole in the unit, hole will be big enough to fit a paperclip into, in the ho;e is a reset button, turn the power on, then hit the reset button, this should fix the problem. Hope this helps

Insignia GPS INSIGNIA NS-CNV20 Pover Up and Shutting down

Try resetting your navigator by inserting a tin tool (e.g. unbent paper clip) into the reset port. A schematic can be found in the owner's manual. Also, ensure that the unit is securely connected to power or that the battery is fully charged. If these steps don't resolve the problem, return with the unit to the place of purchase to pursue service options.

Complete shut down

If the battery is fully charged, or you're using the car power adapter and the unit will not power up, you should take it to repairs.

The battery it good only for a couple of hours use just by itself. If You're running it only on battery power it will shut down in a while.

When the unit turns on all looks well, until the gps gets a position anf then it shuts down (screen goes blank. Is there a way to reboot ther GPS

Is it connected to a power source? If not then it may need to be fully charged and then connected . Many GPS fail due to low battery power or a bad power source.

Zumo 550 randomly shuts down, sometimes won't power up again.

Commonly happened when playing MP3's using an early version of the firmware. Install the Garmin updater and install the latest firmware and patches.

My original unit did the same thing.

GPS GARMIN 340 turn it off by itself.

Does the unit comes on by itself once power is applied to the unit? If it doesn't come on by itself, then there is a problem with your power supply. The unit is designed to detect when an external power supply is applied and turn itself on. It is also designed design to detect if you unplug the unit from the external power supply. It will say "Lost external power, shutting down in 30 seconds". BTW are using Garmin cables?

No GPS fix

Had same problem on trip down the pacific west coast. Best solution is to replace your GPS antenna to the 175 ( It is a problem on the 120)and upgrade the software. If this is not feasible, shutting the unit down for about 10 to 15 mins. sometimes dumps the GPS data overload. and allows FIX re-acquisition.
