Question about Sigma APO 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX DG/HSM Lens

1 Answer

Lens does not lock into 50mm position........only to 60mm

One day I was zooming in and out rather more than usual with my 50-500mm Sigma lens and it got stuck at around the 150mm point for no reason. When I unscrewed the little lock/unlock switch a tiny screw came out.

When I tried zooming the lens in and out with my hands I noticed it gets stuck from time to time like something is caught between the barrel and inner lens. Finally, I could hear it rattling inside when I shook the lens vigorously. But, the zooming and panning is now effortless like before.

Apparently it must have come out as I do not hear the rattling sound anymore, but noticed another piece of tiny tubular like plastic piece on the floor. Although I can pan and zoom in and out effortlessly, I still cannot retract to the 50mm focal point.

It stops at around 60mm. I am assuming another loose piece of plastic of some sort is stuck on the bottom of the lens unabling to retract fully.

I'm not certain, but it's a good bet this is the problem. I unscrewed the glass lens and also the bottom metal portion of the lens which is held by 4 screws to no avail.

How can I take apart the lens towards the middle of the lens as I am pretty certain something is lodged & trapped in the middle of the lens somewhere.

If this is not recommended by an amateur can anyone suggest a good inexpensive place in NY where I can take it for repairs?

Or a link to a site that shows the schematics to this lens?

Any kind of feedback would be noble and will take it in consideration.

Thanks for reading.

It problably a loosen tiny piece inside the barrels. Do not attempt disassembly, you can ruin the less. In NY you can get the repair information in BH.

My sigma 50-500 lens is lock in 500mm position

I believe on some Sigma lenses there is a switch to lock it in a 'Macro' position, usually at the long end of the zoom range. If this applies to your lens, it may be worth checking that this has not been accidentally set. There may also be some information in the manual whichcame with the lens.

Sigma lens manuals

Chuck, sorry for the late response. Last days I had to work through several hundred anonymous questions. Most irrelevant and not complete, so I could not answer most of them, but I had to read them all.
Sigma, does not have a service, where you can download a manual. But the manuals from Nikon, most of the time don't tell anything about how to use the lens.
I found a page with all specs. The link is down here.

I have to guess why you did put the question here in the first place. I think because you have a Nikon camera without a focus motor. Like a D3x00 or the D5x00 or a D40 or D60. (for the x you can add 0 1 2 or 3)
If you have one of these camera's the lens can't be used with auto focus You only can use the lens in manual focus. Most other camera's from Nikon, like D80 D90 D7000 D300 and more expensive, all do have a focus motor and can work with this lens in full automatic focus mode.

No lens lock on a Sigma 135-400DG, falls to full extension.

buy the glass that does not zoom via push pull - When they get old and sometimes right off the shelf new the push pull zooms get loose - the only fix is for you to have it serviced and even then it is a temporary fix as the very nature of what you do to use the zoom will ultimately cause the same problem to occur.

Zoom lock slide switch

It will only lock the lens in the 50mm position (for storage and carrying) or past 100mm (to keep the elements from making contact when using a tc).
