No sound

Turn the volume up. Turn on the Garmin Nuvi. Tap the "Volume" button on the "Where to?" or home screen. Move the slider for the volume up.

Unmute the Garmin Nuvi. Tap the "Volume" icon again. Uncheck the "Mute" option, if it is currently checked.

Make sure the voice is not faulty. The navigation instructions are provided by a voice. To verify whether or not the present voice is faulty, you must switch the voice. Power on the Nuvi and tap the "Tool" icon. Tap "Settings" in the Tool menu. Tap the "Language" option and tap the language you want. Then select another voice to use. Now go back to the home screen and enter an address into the "Where to?" option. See if you can hear sound now.

Update the Garmin Nuvi with WebUpdater. Download and install WebUpdater from the Garmin website (see Resources). Launch WebUpdater on the computer, and connect the Nuvi to the computer with the USB cable. The software will detect the Nuvi and locate all updates for the device. Confirm that you want to update the device when prompted and WebUpdater will download the updates to the Nuvi.

Reset the Garmin Nuvi. A master reset will restore the Nuvi to its factory configurations and delete all favorites and waypoints that have been added. Power off the Nuvi and unplug it from any power source. Hold your finger down on the bottom right corner of the Nuvi screen, at the same time power the device back on. When asked "Do you really want to erase all user data?," remove your finger from the bottom corner of the screen and tap "Yes." The device will reset and sound should be restored.

New Garmen is in Spanish. Want to change to English. Purchased in Ontario, Ca. at Costco.

  • Press TOOLS (The spanner icon at the bottom right of the screen which shows WHERE TO and VIEW MAP
  • Press SETTINGS (The spanner icon) or LOCALE (The blue icon) on models that don't have a settings icon
  • Press LANGUAGE (The lips icon)
  • This brings you to a screen with 3 items; VOICE, TEXT LANGUAGE and KEYBOARD
  • Press TEXT and change it to AMERICAN ENGLISH
  • Press VOICE and select a voice from an English speaking country
If you don't speak Spanish there may be a bit of trial and error involved but I hope I have given you enough information to solve your problem.

It has stopped speaking. Everything else works fine. We have checked that the voice is definitely switched on. It's a TomTom about 4 years old.

the spoken direction mode only works when you have selected the "computer voice" option. If you have changed the voice in the settings, spoken direction will be disabled. Also, in the settings, there is an option to switch off the speaker. Make sure you have not done this. Finally, tap the bottom left hand side of the screen and move the slider bar to the right to increase volume.
I hope one of these hints helps

Garmin Nuvi 265 wt...how to get voice command to work?

Hi,
this may require two sessions but - here goes:
1- turn the unit on - select the VOICE icon on the opening screen - triple check it isn't muted and change it to 90% voice volume.
If this doesn't give you sound WHILE DRIVING - it won't give you voice unless you're moving or driving.

Then - turn the unit off - Turn it back on- - as it is starting up - and blank- place your thumb in the LOWER RIGHT CORNER of the blank Screen.

this will open this window:
SELECT - YES - it will reboot and your minor settings will be lost - like saved address and favorites - not your updated maps.

This will reset you to default NEW -
When done - sound will be as it was when new if no sound - return for repair.

No sound in tomtom

The speaker has gone open circuit ( faulty speaker is common on this model ) or the headphone jack in the bottom is faulty ( also common on this model ) . The headphone socket has a switch inside it that switches the internal speaker OFF when an external speaker is plugged in . If this switch stays open you get NO VOICE .
You can check easily to see which fault you have.
  1. Take the SD card out
  2. switch on the tomtom
  3. do you hear the drums sound ?
  4. if you do ...... the speaker is OK
  5. Insert the SD card and wait till it loads up
  6. tap screen then select preferences
  7. move through and select " change voice "
  8. Check to see if you have a voice selected
  9. Return to main nav screen
  10. Tap screen just above lower left ( in the rectangle )
  11. The volume control should be UP
  12. if you have no sound when tapped here , the likely cause is open switch on the socket .
  13. Open up the tomtom , and clean switch carefully
  14. make sure when a PLUG is inserted the switch opens and when the plug is REMOVED the contacts close. properly
  15. Good luck , you have probably fixed it by now.

Set up voice John Cleese

Hi,

You need to put the File / files associated with the voice onto your SD card in the Voices folder.

Use an SD card reader and your PC to look on the TomTom SD card. Find the folder called "VOICES". Copy the John Cleese voice files into the "VOICES" folder.

Once this is done put the SD card back in your TomTom. Switch on. When the TomTom starts up , tap the screen and select "Preferences" , then move through Preferences until you find "Lips" icon and under that it will say " Change Voice" . Tap the Lips Icon , then move right or left until you find the required / John Cleese Voice and select that. Your Tom Tom should now give directions with the John Cleese voice.

Please note: Some voices that you can download free of the internet can contain viruses or if you are unlucky they can contain faulty data which can effect the workings of your TomTom.
As a precaution , before you copy or alter or add anything to your TomTom SD card you should make a Backup of your SD card onto a PC. The if anything gets upset on your SD card you can always format it and restore the origonal data.

Good Luck.
