No fuel from fuel pump to fuel filter on John Deere 5420 tractor

My John Deere 5420 had starting problems. It was a real test of finding the real problem. I put in all the "t" fuel stuff (see this site for 5420 starting problems and read my PS's too)... it started to blow blue smoke! The power got less and less and finally it would do nothing but idle! Geeze! All that time fixing what I thought was the problem! As it turns out, the entire fuel filter housing was bad. It is easy to replace. About $100 bucks. Just undo two hex (really big hex) bolts and the fule lines on both ends. The gasket for the little pump was too hard and the inside was pitted on the metal. Once I replaced the who unit I pumped the fuel from the tank all the way up to the fuel filter. Then I went around to the other side and opened the air bleed bolt and pumped till it came out over on the other side. Secured the bold and the dang thing sarted on the first crank!

It turns out all the effort of the above was NOT needed! Anyone want to buy a JD Diesel fuel pump! cheap! LOL! So before you do all the stuff I just suggested... pay the $100 bucks and see if that is the real problem.

On a really fun note... I can now get all the way up my hill (.5 mile) in high gear! The full power is restored. As it turns out, the JD injectors supply 7 times the fuel needed at any one time. This is why there is a fuel return line. I did replace my entire incomeing fuel line which was not that difficult. The outgoing return line was impossible to get to and thank goodness it worked!

    Good luck!

SOURCE: john deere tractor x585 not getting 12 volts at fuel pump

To check pump u remove fender deck, unhook connector, put 12 volt power to it.I have seen pumps react to a swift kick to the fuel tank,NO JOKE.You first have to check fuses,2 on control board and early x585 machines had a single red wire near control board that was only for fuel pump.Remove right side air screen and check for voltage on the relay closest to the radiator.Red wires #231/232 feed your fuel pump relay.Current flows from that relay #655 pink wire and goes to your fuel pump .Also check#215 grey wire {fuseable link}coming from starter post, they WILL burn out,it goes to #221 red wire with inline fuse and feeds rear of the 2 relays, that is your EFI relay. You have 3 fuseable links coming off starter post, check all of them.

You may try blowing backwards from behind the fuel filter into the gas line. Not to much air pressure though. Make sure the gas cap is off.

SOURCE: adjusting John deere ''Sabre'' model deck

Move machine to flat/level surface, with deck raised put a 2x4 between rear of deck and ground.Make sure that the 2x4 goes all the way under deck from one side too the other.Once that is done lower deck all the way and make sure lift lever is all the way forward. Then on the rear top side of deck loosen bolt that holds arm to deck bracket, pull bracket as far down as you can then retighten bolt. This is also the point where you can level deck side to side.

2320 johne deere disiel tractor cranks over but won't start

check fuel filter first and that fuel pump works by openig at fuel pump and pushing fuel out just short of injection pump-- if no fuel pushes out prime fuel system by pushing air into fuel tank or using a in line hand fuel pump--- fill tank on tractor so that fuel is above injector pump also helps probably a prime problem

Can u tell me what size of hydrolic pump is fitted to 1850 john deere tractor

There are 3 pumps that were used on this model.
Part number is:
alternate / sub PN: AL70641
This 8 piston 11.3 CM3 pump is rebuildable at a fraction of the cost of a new or re-manufactured pump.

There are 6 kits for this pump depending on what has failed on the pump.

The John Deere Parts catalog can be found here using you model number:

Pump PN: AR103036 23CM3=1.4 CU.IN
Pump PN: AR97872 40CM3=2.4 CU.IN

All of these pumps can be repaired. It just takes a talented and patient person to do the repairs with kit parts in hand.

John Deere 5420 has no fuel from tank to filter

John Deere and it's lack of engineers, located the fuel tank below the engine/filter assembly, so it won't gravity feed. The little pump in the top of the fuel filter is worthless. The easy fix is to install an inline diesel fuel pump with a overpressure line off a blank fitting from the fuel filter, which will allow excess pressured fuel to flow back to the tank. What I did was install a fitting with a fuel hose about 2 feet long that has a lawn mower fuel cut off, with a section of hose after it, that can be plugged, when not used. Anytime fuel prime is lost to the filter, then it's a major effort to get it back. This is the cheap way. If you disconnect your fuel line the fuel flows all the way back to the tank, however I believe there is a check valve located underneath the tractor, before the tank, which keeps it from going all the way back. Anyway, I use a large cc syringe to pull fuel up to the filter. After each pull, I close the lawn mower shut off to keep the progress. Empty the syringe and then open the valve and pull some more. Once you have plenty of fuel to the filter, then I close the red fuel shutoff on the back of the fuel filter (closes the line to the tank). Then I push some fuel with the syringe toward the injector pump, while cranking the engine. At this point you don't want it to start, because you will pull all the fuel from the filter, because the red shut off is closed on the back of the filter. After only one or two "pushes" , then close off the lawn mower shut off, open the red shut off on the back of the filter, and crank. Mine usually starts about 5-15 seconds from starting to crank. DON'T CRANK TOO LONG, THE BOOK WARNS ABOUT OVERHEATING THE STARTER. What stupid engineers designed this? Hope this helps. As a side note the fuel hose off the tank is one size, and then it goes through the check valve and changes to a smaller diameter, to go to the filter.

Will not hold RPM. changed air and fuel filters, whit no change.Engine RPMS go up and down even sitting still.

hook up a vacuum gauge to the engine intake vacuum port then: while the engine is running look for a vacuum leak.

Tractor is not getting fuel pass the fuel fi; filter

Check the fuel lines, fuel pre-filter[screener] and check valve, all of these are ahead of the fuel filter. Also if the fuel filter is not the problem then the primer pump on top of the filter housing may have a leak or debris in the diaphragm so that you can not get the fuel to completely fill the filter.Once the filter is full, full fuel out of the bleed screw on the filter housing, then you need to turn on the key and keep on pumping the hand primer. If it still will not start then get a 11/16 wrench and crack two lines on the injection pump.Crank over the tractor until it sounds like it may go,tighten the lines, the crank again and it should start.
