Question about Mtd Yard - Man 160cc, 21" Self - Propelled Lawn Mower

1 Answer

Have a self propelled yardman mower with a 6.5 hp Honda engine. First 3 years never had an issue with the thing starting. Past 2 years it has been a battle. I have read of a few similar situations on this site. Here is what I have done to this point. I have replaced the plug and air filter. Drained the fuel tank and Carb. removed float bowl and cleaned with carb cleaner. Replaced fuel lines. changed and checked oil level made sure the micro switch on the safety shut off was permanently in the (I assume closed position) it is mechanically pushed in. I have spark to the plug...and I can remove the drain plug on the carb and have fuel coming out. All I am getting is at best a 2-3 second firing of the engine and at worse back fires and fowling of the plug. An observation I have made (not sure if it is the root cause) is sometimes if I mess with the linkage coming from the back of the engine and going to what controls the butterfly's on the carb (and you have to do this for 2-3 minutes) the engine will run fine. That is if you can get it to fire to begin with. Not having any idea how that system works or if it what I am doing is just a band aid for the actual cause. My question is. What do I need to do? I appreciate any suggestions and advice. Thanks....Stuck in tall grass.

How to change the oil in my MTD 6.5h Honda yardman

Many mower engines no longer have a drain plug, or the plug is covered by the deck or other components, the best way is to suck the oil out via the oil filler, there are plenty of inexpensive vacume pumps availble that makes the job easy, check out the dealers or e bay.

What type of oil do you use for 6.5 hp yardman lawn mower mtd 160cc 21 inch self propelled

The manual will call for 30 weight, but 10w30 works just fine. Be careful to not overfill the crankcase. Your machine will take 16 - 18 oz's when the crankcase is empty.

If it's a newer mower, it doesn't have condenser or points. The newer (past 5-10 years) engines have capacitive discharge ignition (CDI). When it dies, check for spark; if it's not there, you may meed a new CDI module.

I bought a Yardman 21" Series 560 self-propelled mower used and the belt was missing. What belt does it take? The manual says 754-04080, but I'm looking for a locally available V-belt. Thank you.

Are you sure the belt part number is not 754-04088?

That is a 33 inch belt. I do not know if you need the 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch wide belt. Pulley size would be the key for belt width. I think it is 1/2. Any local source automotive parts or Lawn Mower supply will have this belt in stock. 1/2 x 33 or 2L 33

If by chance I got the belt part number wrong, (I don't think so) just respond here and we can keep searching for your belt.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Starts but when chock goes off stops running Honda engine Yardman self propelled mower

OK take and check this. A lot of the honda engines, especially push mowers, tillers and pressure washers, they put a type of coating inside the gas tank. The bad thing about this type of coating is it has a tendency to peal and wash into the carb. I would look inside the tank to see if there is any debris. I would also clamp off the fuel line and take out the bolt that holds the fuel bowl on and catch the fuel that drains out in a clean tray. If it looks dirty, pull the carb and clean it,it should fix it.
