My garbage disposal is not working. it "hums", but doesn't grind, and water drains slowly. there is nothing stuck in it.

You are going to have to try to push it through the stuck point. It is clogged without a doubt. Could be a piece of silverware in there. Use a flashlight and take a look down in the hole. Do not stick your hand in there but you can use a pliers or something to dislodge it.

Copy following link for troubleshoot walk-thru:

Check that unit is receiving 80% rated voltage
Humming sound means start capacitor has gone bad.
Replace disposal.

My Badger 5 in sink erator is leaking at the bottom of the unit where the electrical wire is connecting tot the metal plate. When turned on, there is a humming noise but the blades do not spin. I have

Thier is an Allen key hole at the very bottom and center of the badger. Try using that with an Allen key. And if it leaks your from where your wires are coming out of your seal is probably bad. Means new badger

Food disposal locked up. Motor not running

I just had the same sympton w/my Badger.1 ... I must have tossed too many ice-cubes at once into the system and it locked up. I am not familiar w/all the gadges, but I found a tiny red button under the unit: press the red button and the unit should work again. But please make sure, the electric switch is turned of before you switch the red button below the unit. Then try to run the disposal w/water. Mine is working again. Good luck.

I have a Badger 5 (5-81A). The motor is humming when it's turned on, however, the blade does not turn. The blade does seem to move freely. Tried reset and hex key but still nothing.

you have something stuck in it more than likely,, use the key ( unplug it first) and turn it backwards,, keep looking inside with a flashlight for the lodged object once you see it,, remove it,, sometimes the key won't work if its something caught in the blades themselves, so use the handle end of a broom or plunger with a wooden handle to push on the blade itself to turn the unit over

I just changed my 15 year old Badger 5 as it would not turn on when I flipped the switch. It worked fine for 5 days and then wouldn't turn on again today. What's up?

These motors have aluminum coils that are not secured by winding shellac (short run duration motors) and can break. If you hear a hum but the motor doesn't turn, you can start it by turnning the impeller with a wooden stick. If it starts, the starter winding or switch has failed. (Please make sure your clickson switch on the bottom of the motor doesn't need resetting.) Just exchange it for one that works. It shouldn't have failed this soon. Good luck.

The motor on my Badger 5 disposal was humming but not rotating. I cleaned out all the debris, reset it and now there's nothing - no hum, nothing. Is my badger dead?

The badger 5 has a dislodge device on the bottom right in the very center. An allen wrench will fit if you have lost the tool that came with it.

FIrts you will need to dislodge anything preventing it from turning. (Insert the right size allen wrench and turn both directions) The remove whatever comes loose after dislodging.

Then opush the red reset button on the bottom. Check the breaker that powers up the disposal, as you may have tripped it.

If the breaker is on, the unit is turning freely, and the reset button is pushed, then the next step is to check for power using a volt meter, to make sure the disposal is indeed getting power. If all the above has been done, the unit IS getting power then yes, the disposal needs to be replaced.

I installed this in sink erator Aug. 8, 2003, and today it just does not run when turned on. I pushed the reset button on the bottom end of the motor, and still nothing happens. It is the Badger model with...

does it hummm =, if it just hums it is jammed you need ot take either a alan wrench or the key that comes with the disposer turn off the electric and in the bottom center there is a hole insert the key and move it back and forth till it breaks loose, the remove the key and turn it on,, if it does nothing at all check the wires in the bottom of the unit over time they could have possibly shook off the wire nuts if not tightened properly,,one other thing is to check the switch and make sure there is power to it and going out of it,,
