Question about Canon Pixma MP500 All-In-One InkJet Printer

I replaced the yellow ink cartridge and the small black cartridges (#8) which I have done lots of times before with no problem. This time the printer will not let me print and the display says" More than one ink tank of the following color is installed" The arrow points to the yellow. There is not more than one yellow cartridge installed. When I open the top of the printer to check the cartridges, both the number 8 black and the number 8 yellow cartridges' lights are blinking. I have taken the cartridges out and put them all back in, I have turned off the printer and tried to start over, but no matter what I do, it still says the same thing! Please HELP!

    This did not work. The same message is on the printer. I did the download and after it was complete, I restarted the computer and the printer. The message is still there that "More than one ink tank of the same color is installed."

    I don't know if you got my reply but the printer still says more than one cartridge of the same color.

It could be more a problem with the coding on the ink cartridge which the printer reads to check cartridge type.

Unless you have alread thrown away the old cartridges for yellow and black, I would suggest you put these back in to first confirm whether the problem is related to the new cartridges.

If you have thrown the old cartridges then buy a new yellow and replace. I have read on the cannon forums that to avoid the problem people keep their old cartridge and just refill with ink.

By the way i found a service manual for your printer. Not sure if this will help but you can atleast confirm if there is a diagnostic that you can run.

    Just choose Windows Vista from the OS dropdown menu, ok? And be sure to include THIS SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD for sure, ok?

    Hi again.. Let me see if what I am hearing from you is correct.. Did you Download/Install any/all Updates for your sytem, or just the one I mentioned? Just so I am clear, I was suggesting that you do all updates. You would be suprised at what a difference it can make. Also, please read page 90 in the USER MANUAL by following this link.

    From what I have read, there are: (from left to right, in order) ONE BLACK #8, ONE BLACK #5, ONE YELLOW #8, ONE MAGENTA #8, & ONE CYAN #8.. IN THAT ORDER EXACTLY... PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK THE EXACT ORDER AND COLOR as well as # of cartridge.

This happens regularly in some models when the alignment of paper is not done correctly. If the cartridge does not have a good print quality, the scanner can not correctly read the alignment and alignment repeated several times until you get it right.
Check the alignment with cartridges in excellent condition.

place the printer cartridge into a small amount of water to make sure the yellow is flowing out. Let me know what this finds and try it again if yellow comes out.

Also, what exactly did you clean, the metal contacts?

I have cleaned and deep cleaned the printer a number of times but when I do a print check the yellow line does not print neither does the black line under it print. When I print anything else the yellow...


If a line doesn't print, the ink is out of the cartridge for that inkjet cartridge color. Replace the cartridge. Deep cleaning can use a lot of ink up at a time.

You cannot switch to the larger black cartridge. You are using a CMYK (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, Black) format for printing color images.

The larger cartridge is used for text only. The smaller black cartridge is used for color or graphic images.

If the black cartridge was not present, every time you needed black in an image, it would have to come from the composition of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. This would greatly reduce the life of the color cartridges.

slowly off and on the printer for five times without cartridge, printer saves data of cart of last 5 only so next time it reads full ink..

my brother mfc 6490 has stopped printing yellow, i've done number cleans and changed cartridges with no luck. has anyone out there got a fix for this?

After replacing black ink cartridge, black ink will not print


check the cartridge contacts in the printer \
a lot of time they geet covered in ink this will not allow the cartridge to print properly and cause headaches
clean with a baby wipe or a paper towel with soap on it
dry thuoly with hair dryer and try again

in the printer driver there is a option that whenever you install a new cartridge it has to be reset otherwise it shows the message the above you quoted. one more option is there that is change the chip of yellow cartridge and black, after doing this please whip circuits of the cartridge and printer carriage block before installing the cartridge

Canon i960 will not print in black ink


Yep same as above. Black prints very light gray after 5 years of good printing. Tried every test, replaced black cartridges with different brands. Just wondering if somehow you can clean the heads. I'm convinced the black head is almost totally clogged. Does anyone know how to remove the printer heas to do this?

Dissapearing yellow


I run about 100+ canon printers from s800 up to the new ip4500.
I have met and solved almost every problem I find described on the web. Your problem with the disappearing yellow ink can be only one thing. The ink cartridge has not been sealed after you injected the ink. If there is even the smallest avenue for air to get into the cartridge it will allow the ink to flow very rapidly back out of the cartridge and into the waste ink pads in the bottom of the printer. You won't be able to see a puddle of ink under the printer until much later when you have done many cleanings or installed many leaky cartridges.
