Question about Black & Decker Grasshog 12 Inch 18 Volt Cordless String Trimmer/Edger NST2018

1 Answer

I used it on some thick grass as an edger. It began to run about half speed. Then the battery seemed to die (motor was hot). Put in freshly charged battery and it ran for about 3 minutes before stopping. Waited 2 days and tried it again; it ran for afew minutes and died. Any ideas would be apprciated.

Where can I get it rewired. Probably cheaper to buy a new one, correct?

It would probably be about as cheap to buy a new one correct?

    Thanks,

When you used the motor in the thick grass it overheated melting some of the insulation in the motor. Now it overheats every time you use it because some of the coils' insulation has melted and are shorting together. Replace or have the motor rewired and you'll be up and running again.

Believe it or not rewiring can be more expensive the buying new. If you can find a new replacement motor it would be better to go with that. Rewiring is an option I take when I cant find it new.

Black&decker electric corded weed eater not running at full speed

the thickness of the cord , the length of the cord will both affect the speed of the motor as it needs extra power to run the longer length or thicker cord
most trimmer motors use a bush at the end of the armature shaft and this is affected by the sap out of the grass and dries out
this causes excessive wear which allows the armature to touch the field winding shoes and "pole "out . This intereference slows down the speed of the machine as it is a short in the field current to the armature
If you have an accredited appliance repair shop that is good with trimmers they may be able to replace the bushes but generally it is a replacement trimmer as the fix
have it checked out anyway.

I used it yesterday and today it will not start. Battery is full charge. Button key is in place.

I would first take a meter and test that the battery actually charged. If that tests out fine ( should read at about 12.8 to 13.5 Vdc), I would then check all the wired connections to make sure they did not come loose.

It starts and runs for a bit but as soon as it hits thicker grass it dies

Joe Hi there. Sadly your trimmer will struggle on thick grass as it's not made for it. You could try moving the trimmer like a scythe. This will aid it as your cutting bit by bit.

You should completely discharge the battery before you charge it again. That should allow more time on the cut unless there is a problem with the bearings or shaft. Good luck...Lee

Airens Zoom 1944 ZTR Blades Slow Down In Bahaia Grass

You mention many PM issues but do not mention a blade sharpening. I don't get on my ZTR without a freshly honed blade installed. "That's" what cuts bahia grass...the blade. You can put all the horsepower you want behind the lade but if you're trying to cut grass with a 2X4 it rips more than cuts grass.

Mower won't start

13 to 15 amps electric or battery operated mower may runs slow when cutting thick grass. also recommended not to cut grass when it's wet & need very sharp blade to do the lawn. may overloading it, cutting grass too thick also draws too much power. check house breaker first.
