In that case the defect is in the chipset of the motherboard and that can't be fixed. Sorry, you need a new iMac, this one is about to die. Save your files as fast as you can.

First boot of Win 7. New PC build

Hi.

First of all when you are in the BIOS and have set the DVD/CD drive as the first boot device make sure you save the settings before you restart the computer as it will not remember the changes if you don't.

Make sure that the lens on the CD/DVD drive is clean and also make sure the Windows 7 install disk is clean and free of any finger prints.

make sure that you keep tapping a key when the drive spins up as sometimes people miss the "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD" message.

If you still can't get the disk to boot then try the install disk in a working PC and see if that reads the disk. If it does then the optical drive could be faulty or does not support DVD format.

Regards.

Mac will not boot, displays folder icon with alternating mac face symbol and ? symbol. have tried removing and externaly reformating the drive with no change. cannot get it to biit from cd

Hello
This situation comes when the System is not recognized. If you have tried to reformat the drive, then it will still display a folder icon with alternating mac face symbol, simply because no System is installed on the hard drive. To repair this, you should consider reinstalling the system using a System DVD (to boot from the dvd, hold the "c" key at startup.

My 21" mid 2007 imac periodically freezes, the

Try booting it into single-user mode holding down Command(Apple) and S buttons when powering up. Then in terminal console, use chkdsk -fy. Use it and use it again until comes back with something like "Volume appears to be OK". Then use command: mount -uw / and then type reboot and try booting normally.
If it does not fix your problem, it's most likely a hardware issue (logic board / graphics card), and you should take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

I have a Que M3 hard drive 80GB,which is not recognized on Imac.

Few thoughts

1. Go to System Profiler (see in Applications then Utilities) and check whether (dependent upon whether it is USB or Firewire) the drive is showing up
2. Have you checked whether the cable is okay, have you got a spare cable.
3. Change the usb port on the imac that you are using (could be damaged)

Good luck

MY iMAC 24" won't go off the apple screen with the spinning circle. I tried unplugging it--unplugged ethernet...etc. started it holding "s" down but nothing??

Was this a restart after an update? sometimes it takes quite a while. if not boot from CD/DVD and repair permission on the drive from the utilities folder. It is the biggest issue with startups.

Gateway 200ARC goes to "Last Known Good Configuration" screen

try reseating the dvd drive and then go into the BIOS to be sure that the drive is being recognized. Actually go into the area of the BIOS that shows the name of the dvd drive that it recognizes.

It it does recognize the dvd drive properly then try other boot cd's. It still may not recognize them.

If so try another known good dvd drive in the laptop and if you have the same problem then take out the hard drive and then see if the system will boot up off of the dvd drive then. If it still doesn't boot then the motherboard is bad.

If it does boot then that means the new hard drive is bad and shorting out the dvd drive controller on the motherboard and the hard drive would need to be replaced.

Hope this helps clear up things for you and sorry for not responding sooner.

Dvd stuck in my computer

When the Mac is turned on look for the small hole near the dvd drive (slot loading i take it?) you will need to insert a straightened paperclip or similar into the hole, the dvd should pop straight out, if the is no hole then if memory serves me the switch is just inside the slot on the right hand side (don't try if you arent confident as you don't want to risk breaking your drive)

also have you tried booting while holding eject, it's done the trick for me on a mackbook pro once or twice

My iMac is not recognizing my CD/DVD-RW drive

Install your startup CD and restart the computer holding down the "C" if your computer starts off of it, the CD player is okay and you have a software problem, if does not start off the CD the CD/DVD needs to be replaced
