Question about Emerson THREADED SHAFT UP RATED - 1.00 HP - EB228

1 Answer

I just replaced my pool pump motor and it runs fine now but will not shut off. I did not mark the wires when I removed them as I didn't think it mattered except for the ground. When I reconnected the new pump, I connected the ground to the green screw and put the two other black wires back on. Could these be switched? If those don't matter, what else might be wrong?

Did the old motor have a built in toggle switch and the new one doesn't? The motor itself will not have an on/off switch...is the one there shorted closed? If the new one has a switch it sounds like you may have crossed the line and load leads so the motor always has power...Please comment back with more details.

I'll have to check. I thought they were just alike. My next thought was to just reverse the wires and see what happens but unfortunately this pump location is terribly difficult to access.

  • vtfcr Sep 18, 2010

I switched the wires and it made no difference. The motor still runs continuously. I did not see a switch on it either.

Btw..I have two motors on my pool. The 2nd motor runs the pool cleaner and it is working fine which seems to indicate that the problem definitely lies with the new motor (vs the computer).

Make sense and any other ideas?

Your would be correct. Most pumps have a high limit switch that kills the power when the motor gets too hot. As long as you have shut the power off to the motor, wait until it is safe from the storm to go and try it again. They usually cool within 30 minutes. Check the pump basket first before turning it on. If it was running for a long time without water circulating, the heat may have distorted the basket and need to be replaced. If the pump turns on and primes up your off to the races. If not, you may need to replace the seals or the entire pump

Pool Pump Runs Intermittently (~10 seconds on, ~1 minute off)

Need more info. What is the voltage at the pump? What voltage is the pump wired for? Sounds like your pump is shutting down from heat thru a safety. If the voltage is wrong the pump will heat up very quickly and a thermal switch will cut out, it will then cool off and try again. Get the readings at the motor connections NOT the breaker.

A.O. Smith c48k2pa105c5 pool pump motor was running fine for 3 weeks. The other day it shut off cause of the thermal switch. Well now when I turn it on it works fien for a couple minutes then it shuts off...

If you mean that this motor is only 3 weeks old, and this is happening, return the motor.

If its an old motor and this is happening, purchase a new one. Even if you had a technician come out to look at the motor, chances are it would cost more than the motor itself.

Largest causes of thermal overload are.

-incorrect wiring
-wiring to wrong voltage
-incorrect wiring size
-bad motor windings
-bad rear end bearings.

SOUNDS LIKE THE TIMER POINTS MIGHT BE STUCK TO GETHER.. SWITCHING WIRES DOES NO GOOD... SOO THE WIRES THAT COME FROM THE BREAKER GO INTO THE TIMER, IF YOU LOOK AT THE BACK SIDE OF THE TIMER YOU CAN SEE HOW IT WORKS, THE OTHER TWO GOTO THE MOTOR.. ITS NOT ROCKET CHEMISTRY

Your pump is protected by a thermal device that shuts it off when over heated. Are you running 110 or 220? In my experience, your pump will run cooler on 220 ... consider coverting if appropriate.

Pool pump 3/4 hp wiring

I think the lug with no screw is for 110 volt? Don't know, but your 2 wires in, black and red are both hot, each one to the lugs, line 1 and 2, the bare wire gets bolted on outside of the motor and jumped to another ground somewhere, and the white wire, goes to a lug marked B?,,, check that one. I went to the web site and they want you to know if you do it wrong, no guarantee, so check out the frame number, then look up your motor and go by the label.

Usually when a polaris booster pump hums it means 1 of 2 things; either the starting capacitor needs to be replaced (its located under the black hump on top of the motor) or the pump is bad. Most likely the starting capacitor needs to be replaces. This is where you should start since the capcitor is only $20-$30. Get a new capacitor from a local pool store, shut the power off to the motor, remove two screws on each side of black hump on top of motor, remove two wires from starting capacitor and install wires on new capacitor, replace cover and turn the pump on. If that doesn't work you will need to replace the motor.
