Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Dear Woodchuck, I saw your reply on the frigedaire defrost problem. I have the same thing going on. Fan is working, compressor is OK but the freezer element gets covered in ice and blocks airflow so fridge doesn't cool. You mentioned to check the defrost timer, heater & thermostat and that newer models have a control panel. I found the thermostat but don't know how to check the timer, heater or control panel. Can you help? Thanks very much, Cathy1098

GE Performance Profile TFX25PPBB Freezer Defrosting

you may have a fault you may not. if the fridge is ok then the freezer is going through an automatic cycle. If the freezer is not working then the fridge will soon follow.
likely faults causing this are; thermistors; worn out compressor motor; degassed compressor/receiver (can become hot and sluggish if lost gas/lubricant mix; dirt around the fan maybe causing it to be sluggish too. make sure you unplug it before touching anything!

When I woke up this morning, the fan on my Amana SCD23VW was running but the compressor was not. I thought it might be in a defrost cycle, but 30 minutes later it was still doing the same thing, and the...

If the fan is running its not in the defrost the fan doesnt run then.
the things that could be the problem are;
the compressor fan is bad so compressor over heats and shuts off
the relay on the compressor is burnt so the compressor wont start
the compressor is bad

i would suspect the relay first..the fan by the compressor secondly and finally last the compressor ..its the least likely thing to go bad

Not freezing wont get down to temparature, stuff has defrosted, makes whooshing noise when dooor opended and light flashes. Its googsed Whirlpool ARC4030UK

If there is whooshing noise, check first the damper fan. See if the fan is broken or if fan duct is obstructed. Check the fan in the evaporator system (defrost system) behind the fridge's firewall.

The problem is commonly the defrost system. Fan or thermostat do not work. As result the coils freeze up. With coils frozen the condenser will go under stress and will loose efficiency. The effect is the system not producing enough cold.

The defrost system comprises defrost thermostat, heater, defrost control and fan. The parts that fail more commonly are thermostat and heater. Both parts are located behind freezer firewall and tested reading impedance with a multimeter. Element and thermostat are faulty if they return Ohms infinity (the circuit is open) when reading impedance with a multimeter at the part's contact.

If thermostat and element are OK, the next part to be tested is the fan. Fan can be tested by simply checking that the motor is running when energized.

Here a tip explaining how to deal with defrost problems on a different fridge model: Fridge not cooling. Procedure is similar with your model.

If defrost system is not the culprit, check if the compressor is starting and working properly. If compressor is not starting properly replace the relay and capacitor kit connected to the compressor motor. Compressor motor has long warranty. If the motor itself is defective call the manufacturer to check warranty terms.

If compressor motor and starter kit are OK, defrost system is OK (including defrost control) it can be a refrigerant leak resulting in low gas pressure in lines. In that case the compressor motor will stay on most of the time.

The most common faults resulting in no heat are due to defrost system problems or to defective compressor motor starter kit.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood

Well, that all depends on the dimensions of, not only the wood, but also the woodchuck itself. There are many different kinds of woodchucks out there and they all very in the amounts of wood it would be able to chuck if woodchucks could chuck wood. So let's start with the woodchuck itself.
1.) Slimmer woodchuck would likely be able to chuck more wood over any given period of time while thicker (fatter) ones would lag behind the quantity of wood chucked, but they may be able to chuck it farther than their slimmer counterpart if that's any consolation.
2.) A smart woodchuck would certainly get more chucking done than one of lesser intelligence because it would be much less likely that a smart woodchuck would get distracted from none wood chucking activities and events.
3.) A friendly woodchuck would be more likely to chuck less wood than a grumpier woodchuck because the friendly woodchuck would want to help other's who were having trouble chucking wood while the grumpy woodchuck is only concerned with his own work.
Now we go over the qualities of the wood that is being chucked.
1.) If you have rather large pieces of wood, then the slimmer woodchuck may have more problems chucking it than the larger woodchuck and may, therefore, produce a lesser quantity of chucked wood.
2.) The length of the wood would affect all types of woodchucks because if all the pieces of wood are of perfect length, then the woodchucks can get good leverage to chuck the wood and increase the wood chucking production.
3.) The type of wood can also affect how well woodchucks chuck wood because lighter types, such as balsa, would be easier for woodchucks to chuck than would maple.
These are the main factors to seriously consider when trying to determine how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if woodchucks could chuck wood, but there are other details that could be taken into account such as, location of the wood chucking, weather conditions of the wood chucking, and the surrounding environment of said wood chucking.

Hi Sir, our frigedaire refrigerator has not been working very well today. Heres the issue I have! Ok, I noticed last night the refrigerator making distrubing sound 4-6 second buzzing sound, and I noticed...

What you got is a compressor relay failure I bet. Take a look at this nice video:
Note: The clicking is a sign of a fatigued compressor relay. Even though this vid featured a whirlpool model they all work the same.

My freezer is no longer freezing food- why?

I looked up your model. This is a self defrosting model which features a fan motor for the compressor and the evaporator. If either of them 2 fans is out then the freezer won't work well. That is the first thing I would check. If only one of the fans is gone out then replace that fan and rock on. If Both fans and compressor are not working then hunt down the timer. It may be stuck in defrost mode. The timer is nestled up behind the cold control and light bulb inside the nice little console in the fresh food compartment. Look under the console for a hole about the size of a dime. Inside that hole a timer advance. Use a flat blade screwdriver to advance the timer till you hear the compressor and fans come on. If the timer is fine the next thing to look for is ice buildup inside the evaporation compartment. If you see that then the defrost heater and termination thermostat needs to be replaced.
If both fans operate ok but the compressor is not working then I would remove and inspect the compressor relay for wear. The cold control would be the next thing to take a look at. If it is open the compressor and fans will not run but the inside light will work.

Freezer not working

The frist thing I would do is clean around the compressor area. Removing air restrictions. I would then make sure the fan down there was blowing air across the compressor and I would see to it the compressor was working ok. I would check the compressor relay. These tend to fall apart with age. If neither the compressor nor the fan was running I would check to see if the defrost timer was stuck in the defrost mode. If all of that was working and I have cleaned the compressor area, I would then check if the inside fan was blowing. I would look for signs of a defrost problem like frost on the rear wall. I would remove the service panel and check the defrost heater and termination thermostat. If either of these is bobo then ice will build in the freezer blocking the flow of air.

Kenmore Not cooling

there are 2 common problems with this frig. one is the defrost timer getting stuck in defrost. in this case all lights will work but no fans and no compressor running. the other problem is the relay overload on the side of the compressor but if this is bad the fan inside the freezer will be running. sounds like defrost timer
