Question about Casio FX-115ES Scientific Calculator

I am trying to use this calculator to do Organic chemistry and general chemistry problems which involve very large numbers and very small numbers or various numbers to both negative and positive powers. When I try to do a calculation such as 1*10(-14) divided by 3.0 * 10(-12)power. I get a completely wrong number. and the answer is displayed in fraction format!! Please help. what function do I need to be in to get regular anwers in sci notation if they need to be?

I plugged in 1x10 the powers button , then the (-) to the left of the calc 14/ divided by 3.3 x10 powers button (-) on left hand side 12. This time I got syntax error, other times i get 1.67 or 3.0 x 10 -27. I was previously using a ti-36x ive been using since high school, I just cant understand this one? I dont understand what the problem is.

• brownbutterf Sep 12, 2010

when I try your method i get syntax error. What mode should I be in?Comp, Complex, Math, MathIo .

• brownbutterf Sep 12, 2010

i dont even know if it is adding the exponents, because -14 - -12 = should equal -3
because the exponenets are involved in division?

Make sure you use the (-) key in the left column above the RCL key to enter negative exponents, not the - key which subtracts.

Do get all results in decimal instead of fraction notation, press SHIFT [SETUP] 2 to select LineIO mode.

it still gives me an incorrect answer. In the calculator I am trying to solve: 1.0*10 -14power / 3.3 *10 -12 power. The answer it gives me is 3.03 *10 to the -27 power. That is an incorrect answer. The answer is 3.03 *10 to the -3 power. That answer would be completely incorrect on the exam. I dont understand what the problem is?

• kakima Sep 12, 2010

Exactly what keys are you pressing and what result do you get?

1 x10^x (-) 1 4 / 3 . 3 x10^x (-) 1 2 / =
gives me 3.03030303*10(-3)

The x10^x key is just to the right of the decimal point.

• kakima Sep 12, 2010

Sorry, I didn't see the number you gave. The result you give is what I get if I omit the (-) before the 12 in the second number.

• kakima Sep 12, 2010

Sorry. The second / (right before the =) doesn't belong. I get the same result in LineIO and MthIO (after converting the fraction to decimal), real and complex.

• kakima Sep 12, 2010

-14 - -12 is -2. 1 / 3.3 is 3.03 10^(-1), thus the exponent of the result is -3. If the -12 is replaced by 12 the difference is 24, resulting in an exponent of -27.

IITJEE 2011 FULL SOLUTIONS PAPER 1

IITJEE 2011 FULL SOLUTIONS PAPER 2

IIT-JEE 2011 AnalysisIIT JEE 2011 was conducted on 10th April 2011 in 131 cities all over India in 1051 centres for 4,85,262 registered candidates. For the first time, JEE has announced that scanned images of the Optical Response Sheets (ORS) with the candidates' details and their responses (answers) will be displayed on the JEE website after 25th May 2011. Answer Keys to JEE 2011 questions will be displayed on the JEE website on 15th May 2011 after completing the evaluation of OMR Sheets.
There were 10 versions for IIT-JEE 2011 - 0 to 9. The order of subjects in both papers were the same - Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics but the total marks, the number of questions and types of questions in both papers were distinct from each other.
Paper-1Paper1 had 69 questions in total for 240 marks - in the order of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Each subject had 23 questions and the pattern was exactly the same for all the subjects.
Chemistry
This is a moderate level paper leaning more towards easy level of difficulty. The usual weightage of Physical > Organic > Inorganic Chemistry is maintained. Most of the questions in this paper evaluate the conceptual clarity of the student.
Physics
Overall the difficulty level of the paper was moderate. Still there were a few numerical questions involving elaborate mathematical calculations making them time consuming and hence difficult. No representation of Optics in this paper. Major focus in this paper was on Mechanics (for a total marks of 31)
Mathematics
Mathematics part of the 2011 JEE paper 1 was considered easier than the paper 1 of 2010. Few questions in Integer answer type require in-depth understanding of the concepts with perseverance in solving problems. Trigonometry had a good representation in the paper; the passage on matrices required quick thinking to interpret and solve the questions. One question about '3 x 3 non-singular skew symmetric matrices' has a basic flaw since odd ordered skew symmetric matrices are always singular. Paper 1 was a moderately difficult paper.
Pattern of Paper-1:
• Q.No.1 to 7 - Single Correct Choice Type (7 questions for 21 marks). +3 for correct answer and -1 for wrong answer
• Q.No. 8 to 11 - Multiple Correct Choice Type (4 questions for 16 marks). +4 for correct answer with NO negatives
• Q.No. 12 to 16 - Paragraph Type(5 questions for 15 marks). There were 2 paragraphs- one paragraph with 2 questions and the second one with 3 questions. All questions were of Single Correct Choice Type. +3 for correct answer and -1 for wrong answer
• Q.No.17 to 23- Integer Type (7 questions for 28 marks). Answers were of single digit (ie, 0 to 9) . +4 for correct answer with NO negatives.
Instructions for the exam was given in the front sheet itself and only 2 pages were provided for rough work. Among the subjects, students felt that Mathematics was a bit tough while Chemistry was easier.
Paper-2Paper 2 had 60 questions in total - in the order of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Each subject had 20 questions and as in paper 1 the pattern was exactly the same across the subjects. Questions had differential markings, each subject had 80 marks and the maximum mark for the paper was 240.
Chemistry
Paper 2 of IIT-JEE 2011 was difficult compared to paper 1. Weightage wise the Physical > Organic > Inorganic formula is maintained. Generally the nature of the questions in Physical chemistry is calculation oriented and hence the difficulty. Also complexity of Organic questions made this paper a challenging one.
Physics
Questions from certain areas which were not represented in paper 1 (gravitation, optics etc.) appeared in paper 2 thus balancing the Syllabus coverage. The difficulty level of this paper was slightly less than paper 1 especially the Integer Answer Type.
Mathematics
Paper 2 Mathematics part was tougher than the first paper - for the complexity in combining topic areas, for e.g. the matrix match had questions from 4 different areas posing a challenge for the student in the exam hall. Likewise, this paper required more calculations in solving than the first paper. Overall Mathematics part of IIT-JEE 2011 was less difficuly and less time consuming than that of 2010. The second paper was restricted to lesser number of areas, for e.g. there were no questions from Trigonometry. But this time Differential Calculus and Coordinate Geometry were well
represented.
Pattern of Paper 2:
• Q.No.1 to 8 - Single Correct Choice Type (8 questions for 24 marks). +3 for correct answer and -1 for wrong answer
• Q.No. 9 to 12 - Multiple Correct Choice Type (4 questions for 16 marks). +4 for correct answer with NO negatives. There was NO partical marking as well.
• Q.No. 13 to 18 - Integer Type (6 questions for 24 marks). Answers were of single digit (ie, 0 to 9) . +4 for correct answer with NO negatives.
• Q.No.19 & 20- Matrix Match Type (2 questions with 4 rows each - for 16 marks). There were 4 elements in the first column to be matched with 5 elements in the second column. Each row carried 2 marks. There were NO negarive marking.
Chemistry section in Paper2 was difficult compared to Paper1. Mathematics and Physics sections were only moderately difficult.

Can anybody tell me about chemical synthisis? or a good reference website for information.

I suggest you take an introductory book on organic chemistry with a chapter or two on organic synthesis.
You also visit Wikipedia using the keyword organic synthesis.
Here is a link to a university website on the subject. I am not qualified to say if it is good or not: I would have to read myself to make an opinion.

Why is it necessary study chemistry?

Examining science is essential to numerous secondary school and understudies, in light of it's being a center prerequisite for a not insignificant rundown of degree programs - for instance, researchers (scientists, scholars, natural chemists, other), therapeutic medicinal services experts (specialists, attendants, doctors partners, others), **** store, dentistry, specialists of osteopathy (DO), chiropractors, and others.
A propelled science degree isn't completely required for a specialist of chiropractic degree (DC), however, without it, Graduates with a DC degree would not have the capacity to get a permit to rehearse in a few states, which do require it.
Yearning doctors and **** specialists must take and go no less than two semesters of natural science; and before they can even take that course, they should likewise take and pass two semesters of general chemistry, science I and science 2, and for the most part, they should win An or B in these courses to be focused on passage into their preferred scholastic projects.
