How do I tell wether a number is rational or irrational?

If a number can be expressed as a ratio of two whole numbers then it's rational.
Alternatively, if a number can be expressed in decimal with a finite number of digits or as a repeating decimal then it's rational.

Radical coversion

To obtain non integer results into a fraction form you must insert at the end of the command line the key sequence [MATH][1:>Frac][ENTER].
The calculator cannot give you results expressed as radicals; at least not natively. You will have to look for a program that does that. Search the or the sites for such program.

I am trying to approximate square roots and need it to come out in a decimal but it won't allow me too.

In MathIO Mode
When you get a result as a radical (root) or a fraction, you can always convert it to its decimal approximate by pressing the [S-D] key. Pressing the [S-D] key a second time usually gives you back the fraction/radical form, but not always.

In LineIO Mode all results are expressed as decimals.

I need the sine of 5 degrees sin(5) in decimal form, how do I get the answer? when I hit enter it just gives me Sin(5).

Assuming you're in degrees mode instead of radians, press diamond then ENTER to convert a symbolic result to decimal.

This can be done in one step by using diamond ENTER instead of ENTER when first calculating the expression. For example:
2ND [SIN] 5 ) diamond ENTER

When i add 12.3 + 12.3 I get the anwser in fraction form instead of decimal form.

If the result is already calculated and displayed, press the [S<=>D] key It will convert a fraction or radical to decimal. This is always possible. If the result is decimal it may be converted to a fraction or a radical (Not always possible).

If the expression to be evaluated is still in the command line and you have not pressed the [=] key, you can force the result to be displayed in decimal format by pressing [SHIFT][=] instead of just [=].

More permanently. If you do n o care for fractions and radicals, set the Input/Output mode to LineIO. To do do press [SHIFT][MODE] to access the (SETUP) screen and select [2:LineIO]

When I divide, I get a fraction. How do I get a decimal

If your calculator is configured to be in MthIO, the fraction that is displayed is always reduced to its simplest form. (The denominator is the smallest possible.)
If you are adding fractions, the result is also a fraction in its reduced form.
If you want to convert a fraction to a decimal number, press the [S<=>D] key.

To set MthIO: Press [SHIFT][MODE] (SetUp) and select [1:MthIO]
To set LineIO: Press [SHIFT][MODE](SetUp) and select [2:LineIO]
In LineIO, all results are expressed in decimal format.

Everything fraction?

Values are displayed in decimal form automatically whenever the total number of digits of a fractional value exceed 10. Otherwise you will have to press the d/c key each time to make it a decimal.
