Question about Dell Dimension E510 Dual Core 2.8 Ghz (847403171179) PC Desktop

1 Answer

I've got a Dell Dimension 5150. After connecting to the mains the power light is blinking amber for some time, it then disappears and only then the computer can be booted. Unfortunately this delay is becoming longer and longer and sometimes I have to disconnect and reconnect the power supply to be able to boot.

Check POST Boot messages for a flat Battery; Check Front control panel circuit over (remove); Check other USB connectors; Try a replacement Power Supply Unit.

A blinking Amber light on this system indicates A power supply or system board failure has occurred.

Here a link to Dell's site that explains the diagnostics lights. The post is too long to put on Fixya.

Blinking amber light and wont boot up.

if the power button was blinking amber, unplug your tower, and hold the power button for 30 seconds to 1 minute, to use any excess power stored in the capassitors in the pc. this was told to me by a dell tech, it is a small issue with the 3100=E310, and 5150=E510 Dimension desktops

Dell dimension 5150 blinking amber lights

I have similar problem these days. After normal shutting down the PC, it can not be powered up again, the amber light blinks. A temp solution for my case is by doing these steps:

1. leave all monitor, network, keyboard and mouse etc. connected
2. disconnect the power, wait until green light and amber light dim.
3. pop up the CMOS battery, then put back in (better to check its remaining voltage, if not good, change a new one)
4. power amber light flash shorter and lighter
5. disconnect any USB connections like keyboard and mouse,
6. immediately connect keyboard and mouse back into USB ports
7. my pc powers up at this point, all green lights shining. Except it displays CMOS setup warnings, give me options to click either F1 or F2
8. I click F1, it goes into normal login XP

The only problem is I could not shutdown PC again, if I do, then I have to repeat 1-8. I have to use "Standby" instead, which I usually do.

Dell Dimension 5150 automatically turns off

That flashing amber light is usually a sign the power supply is failed or is failing. I would suspect the power supply is the problem in yours. It is the better of the two problems connected with the flashing amber light..the other is motherboard is failing. Arrrr!
hope this helps (it takes a standard- oh say 350 watt 20-24 pin power supply unit.)
Hope an answer helps.
Please leave rating, thankyou
