Question about FrancisFrancis! X5 Espresso Machine

2 Answers

I have a FrancisFrancis x5 that trips my kitchen GFI the moment I turn it on. I have read that the boiler might get fried, or the controller board or possibly a fuse... I have popped the top and can find no fuse. The board looks good and the boiler doesn't appear to have any strange damage. I am not a tech guy so all the answers about people putting in their own PID is WAY over my head. What can I do? Is there a way for me to check the boiler to see if it is OK? How about the controller board? Help!!!

I just called Illy yesterday and they suggested plugging it into another outlet as it tends to trip the GFI for some reason. I used another outlet and it did work. However, I also replaced the burned out coil.

Wen you replaced the coil, did it stop tripping the GFC? Moving it to another outlet is not a good answer. There is a flaw someplace that is causing a short. Where did you get the heating element and was it easy to install?

It did the exact same thing after I replaced the coil but took longer to trip.
I should clarify what they told me. They said move it to another GFI on the same circuit, but you're right, it shouldn't trip and there's probably something else I need to check.

It was fairly easy to install. I had to get some Permatex heat resistant gasket maker in order to get the shell to stop leaking.

Let me know if you need any more information. I know how frustrating this unit can be.

Mine just went out as well. I tried to call the number on the Manual and the address of the person is no longer valid and the phone number is Illy Caffe and requires a person's name to get into the system. Anyone...anyone... Thanks.

I had the same problem and called the Illy repair people yesterday. They said for some reason it does this on GFI's and to try it on another outlet. It worked for me but I also replaced the heating coil. I was able to buy an exact match of the burnt out coil for about $40.

I have a FrancisFrancis X5. The on/off switch does not work. When I plug it in both front lights go on and turning the switch to on or off does not affect anything. The pump also runs in either...

I'm just about to order some parts from Empire Fulfillment. Code A000038 if you have a 230V and Code A000084 if you have a 110V. Based on the diagram they sent me, looks like the whole boiler unit is all they sell, not only the element.

My X5 had been overheating somewhat and the steam valve drips water while making coffee. I heard a pop/bang from it yesterday and now it will not heat the water beyond lukewarm. What do I need to purchase...

Hi
There are a few things that make a pop and not heat in a Francis machine.
1. The heating element.
2. The control board
3. Not always but the thermal fuse on top of the boiler.

Remove the clock by pulling out. there is an 8mm nut up inside. Remove. Then go to the back and remove the #2 Allen screw. Then pry the top up and it will snap off. Check for a burned area. If not do a continunity check on the heating element and thermal fuse. If they have continunity its probably the board in back.

X2 francis francis trips breaker when plugged in?

Hi
Tripping the breaker is usually a bad heating element. You have to check each heating element to determine which element is bad (2 on and X2). Use an ohms meter and check the 2 elements on each boiler for a reading of between 12 and 16 ohms. If no reading that is the bad element. Its in an aluminum boiler so lubricate the end of the bolts(threads) before you try to remove them or they might break.

My X5 won't turn on. I flip the power switch and nothing happens.

could be the thermostatic fuse on the boiler, the heating element died, many possibilities here...

My francis francis machine doesn't heat up anymore. how can I fix it or where in hawaii??

Hi
If it turns on its noot the thermal fuse on top of the boiler. It can be a couple things. The board is bad or the heating element is bad. Do a ohms reading on the element across the terminals and you should get a reading of 12 to 16 ohms. If you get that its the board. If not its the element. Make sure that the machine is unpluggfed before testing.

I have a francisfrancis x8 machine and cannot find my owners manual. I have a red light blinking after using the steam wand and need to know what that indicates. Also, where can I download the manual?

I've lost my manual too. I think the red blinking light means that the boiler is cooling down (from making steam). This machine only has one boiler so it must cool down and relieve the pressure built up by the steam before making another shot of espresso. You can turn the wand back on and shoot the hot water into a mug and this will speed up the cool down process.

Heating element burn out

Most problems with too much heat, too little or circuit breaker tripping most likely point to this.

If your water is "hard" then this will happen. Clean with vinegar weekly, or one of those expensive solutions they sell to avoid this.

Part ordered through illy's parts sub, $35 and 3 weeks. About 2 hours to disassemble/reassemble.
