Question about Dryers

Open Question

Hello we have a Simpson sirocco 455 dryer, it is heating but no air is blowing out of it, then after 5mins it trips the reset button, I suspect the fan has given up? I have checked all the exhaust hoses, they are clear- the dryer is also sounding a little different eg no fan working. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks

there is an oval cover on the back of the dryer. Remove this cover and you will probably find a broken fan belt. A replacement costs about $20 Aus.

NOTE: If you have been using the dryer for a while in this condition there will certainly be moisture inside the dryer. Replace the belt and leave the dryer for a few days to dry itself out (motor and electricals) before firing it up.

SOURCE: when the dryer is on high or medium heat, it trips the power breaker of the house. it does not do this on air only/no heat", which makes me think of a short in heating unit.

the dryer is run by a universal motor, and these motors (while being very robust) can draw more current if the torque put on the drive train is overloaded. try running dryer with less clothes.

I repaired my broken fan belt with a drop of super glue - there is virtually no load on the belt and it now works perfectly again. A 30 sec quick fix.

SOURCE: Simpson Sirocco 350 Dryer cuts out after 5 minutes

Its probably NOT the sensor causing the problem. Have you checked the fan belt, that its not broken, come off the pulley or stretched? Put your hand over the airvent outlet at the back after it has been running a few minutes, if there is a lot of hot air coming out, then belt is ok. If not, replace the fanbelt with a new one, and problem will be solved. The sensor pops out because of overheating - usually because either the fan belt is broken or stretched, or the lint filter is blocked. Hope this helps!

Is it a big job to replace the heater element on the Simpson Sirocco 350 dryer?

It won't be the element unless a wire from it is grounding against the casing. You most likely have some sort of issue with the home breaker.

Hello- The first thing to check, if you haven't already, is how well the dryer is venting. Make sure there are the flexible duct from the dryer to the wall is not crushed or crimped in any way. As well, with the dryer running, go outside and locate where the dryer exits the wall and feel how much air is coming out. Is should be blowing strong out of the vent. If not, and if the ducting travels a long distance through the walls you may want to have a duct cleaning service out. If there is a lot of lint build-up in the vent then the dryer will have trouble evacuating the hot air and the unit can overheat causing the thermostat to trip. If all your venting is ok but the thermostat is still tripping then replace the thermostat. Hope this helps, best regards.

difficult one , but drier will typically switch off if the over temp. sensor activates. Suggest you move the drier away from the wall or any area that could block air flow into the air ducts and retest. Very unlikely both would do the same thing. Common denominator is its position..

Make sure that both poles of your circuit are live - An electric dryer uses 220 volts to the heating element, but taps into only one pole (110 volt) for the motor that spins the drum. Check your circuit breaker to make sure that neither pole has tripped.
