Question about Car Audio & Video
In my experience of audio systems on motor vehicles increased static on radio stations can be caused by a few things. The most cmoon caused are electrical grounding or earthing, electrical interference from the charging or ignition system or simply bad connections to the stereo. As this is AM stations you are talking about it is more likely that you will get interference as AM cannot block static caused by everyday things like FM can. As this is a hybrid car and you are basically surrounded by electric I would say that there is some connection problem. Being 5 years old I would guess that the vehicle is now out of warranty so getting anything dont free of charge is unlikely.
My advice to you would be to take it to a dealer and have them check it out, if there is a common problem with the Prius then they may have some technical bulletin informing them of this and they have to then fix the car for free. It is similiar to vehicle recalls but because it is not a serious or dangerous problem they dont actually recall the vehicle, the manufacturer just issues the dealers technical bulletins so as people come in one by one with the problem they can fix it for them.
I hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa
