How do I free up the bendix on the starter of an 83 AMC spirit?

The AMC starter bendix is prone to lack of lubrication issues. Here's a permananet fix: remove battery cable Pull the starter Clean the spiral gear that the overrunning clutch rides on with WD40. This is the gear and starter shaft under the starter end cone. I soak "spray" them and use a toothbrush to get all the crud out. Relubricate with a slight smear of MOS2 grease (don't go overboard here) Lightly lubricate the solenoid pivot point under the sheetmetal cover. Reassemble and test. If it still hangs it's time for a rebuild.

Maybe a new starter but the bendix drive gear is not kicking into the flywheel teeth. Take the starter off and connect to a battery momentarily to see the bendix drive gear is jumping out. If not, replace the bendix on it or take it back and tell them it's a faulty starter.

Starter sometimes start the car sometimes does not why
It sounds as if the bendix in the starter is sticking. If you can access the starter relay spray some silicone spray in and on the bendix to loosen it and free it from any dirt and contamination.

How to tell if 1982 amc spirit has a vacuum leak
I've always used starting fluid/ether to do that. Start engine, while running spray it around the suspected leakage areas and if engine revs, there's your vacuum leak. Works every time.

When key is turned only a clicking sound occurs. Is this a bad starter?
Assuming the battery has a full charge, the likely culprit is the bendix on your starter. Nowadays, its usually easier to replace the entire starter rather that replacing just the bendix.

Now, having said this....take the starter off and have it checked at a major chain auto parts store. Most (if not all) will perform this test for free.

When i go to crank the car the starter makes a sound like the bendix if it has one is just free turning and it is not turning over the motor is it the starter
starter has a bendix ,if you here a whirring noise and no crank .two poss.starter or the flywheel has teeth missing in that spot.

Starter makes nois for a few seconds after car starts
When the starter is released, the starter solenoid is responsible for returning the pinion gear to the inside of the starter motor, and it sounds like yours might be sticking. Remove the starter motor, and have a parts store test it out for you (they should do it for free) and make sure that the gear returns after the power is switched off. If it does, remove the housing from the solenoid, and give it a good cleaning. I hope this helps you out!
