Sony Vaio VGC-RB576 motherboard fried

I have a 1-1/2 yr old Sony Vaio desktop. Today the geek at Staples told me the motherboard was dead and that I needed a new computer or a new motherboard. (I called sony and they quoted me $600+.) This is the 2nd computer that this has happened to me in the past 2 years. The other PC was a Dell. the tower is kept under my desk.Is it me? I shut down properly every night. Sometimes it boots up again. What can cause this to happen twice? Power to the house? Do I need a lightning rod? Please tell me what I am doing wrong. I can't afford a new computer. thanks in advance! kimbb nound and system crashes w i try to load the drivers

Leemac, how dusty is your air in your neighborhood? Also, how often do you blow out your computer with compressed air? i common cause of board failure is due to dust blanketing the components inside. That in turn makes them remain hotter then usual. Leading to early failure.

As for right now, you should be able to get away with a operating system reload. Even though the problem might be fixed without doing that, the time it would take to manually fix it would probably outweigh the time it would take to just reload it.

Wait, so the system does come up ? Does it get into windows ? If it does, *********** board is not "DEAD"

So the only problem you have is the audio?

You don't need to buy a 600 board. What type of system (make and model) is your Vaio ?

The video chip failed. Since its soldered on the motherboard the entire board will have to be replaced - a complicated and expensive job that only a repair shop should do.

Sony Vaio VGC-RB576 motherboard fried

if you have problems with outages and surges, then the only way to protect electrical goods is by purchasing a surge protection socket extension. But you should check that your power options in control panel are set that on the shutdown drop down list the pc lists shut down and does not say restart. Also go into bios F2 or Del on boot up and look and see if time and date are correct, if not then the cmos battery needs changing (Cr2032 disc chaped on motheroard) then in advanced cmos settings, then look for 'ACPI', make sure this is enabled so as to support windows shutdown settings, then save settings and exit for a reboot.
