Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator

Ice Maker Trap door may be broken

I Have a side by side unit - looks like the picture on the screen before this one.
When pushing glass against lever for icemaker, the corkscrew does turn inside, but no ice comes out. At some point later, a pile of ice falls on the floor.
The trap door that (I assume) is supposed to open to let the ice out is out of place or has been jarred loose. I try to put it back in place but there is nothing to really keep it tight. Now it appears heat from room is entering through that little trap door and causing frosting to occur on the bottom of the ice maker. - So I'm probably wasting energy too.
Thanks

Believe to be the same problem with ice despencer door not closing all the way after dispencing cubes, causing lots of frost build up issues inside.

Same problem with the broken plastic piece...Is there really no way other than a whole door?

  • vabikerbob Sep 04, 2008

Sounds like several people have this problem.

We have a Kenmore side by side and the ice trap door is broke and the weight feel off. It's not sealing off the freeezer area and frost is biulding up inside. What can be done to get Kenmore's / Sears / K mart attention? It is a faulty part for sure and should be recalled and fixed for free.

I am having the same problem. My husband took off the front panel and we discovered there is a small piece of plastic holding the ice dispenser door in place that is broken so the door doesn't seal.

I called Sears to see if the part is replaceable -- it's not. I have to buy an entire freezer door for $464 because a .10 cent piece of plastic is broken.

This seems to be a common problem. My refrigerator is only 3 years old. Perhaps we need to make a complaint to Sears/Kenmore together.

Hello nassaupc - If the unit has stopped making ice completely, try checking the following steps.

· It may be turned off. Look for the wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If the wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. If so, try one of these: If your ice maker has a small red plastic lever, lower it to lower the wire. If there\'s no plastic lever, simply lower the wire. In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again.

· Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won\'t cycle properly.

· When was the last time the filter was changed? Most side-by-side filters are recommended to be change approximately every 6-9 months depending on your water usage and frequency. The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice or have a clogged water filter. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts!

· Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary. The ice maker head assembly may have broken parts. Look to see if the gears are broken. Check to see if the small plastic arms that rest against the ice rake are broken. If the ice maker head assembly is modular and you\'ve found broken parts, you can just replace it.

Should these suggestions prove to be ineffective, contact with a professional to accurately pinpoint any potentially more serious issues.

Icemaker doesn't work - no ice ejected

Krakus, there is no fuse in the dispenser assy., but there are two switches mounted on the control bracket. The posts on the brackets that hold the switches are really thin and it's possible that it broke. Therefore when you are pressing the lever you are not making the switch and sending the juice to the auger motor. Remove the dispenser cover by inserting a flat blade screw driver in the slots at the bottom. Pry out gently and the cover should pop off. Then slide it up and off. Now you will be looking at the control bracket and see the switches on the left and right side. See if the switch holder is broken. If this is the case your part number is 2183771. Not a hard job, just have to take your time. Im assuming that when you tested the auger motor you verified that the drive coupler was not broke. Catriver..post back
