I don't know if you got my first message but please repost the link there isn't anything here

  • thomasjnieme Sep 12, 2010

Thank you for re-posting that so fast, however I went to this site earlier and these steps did not work for me. I think that particular page works best for those who are having issues with all discs, I'm just having trouble playing dvd and blu ray discs. Any other suggestions.

  • thomasjnieme Sep 12, 2010

My warranty is up I'm going to have to pay for any work I have done. are you sure I have to bring it in? Videogames work. This suggests to me that there is an issue with the settings and not the laser or driver.

  • thomasjnieme Sep 12, 2010

Alright thanks... My warranty is expired anyway, plus it was a gift. I'll figure something out. Thanks for the help man I appreciate it. I think because the videogames are working I might just go out and get a dvd player.

  • thomasjnieme Sep 12, 2010

Thanks bro, I've tried most of this already but I appreciate the time and detail you gave me.

Ok it sounds like you have a display setting problem, please try this step first to see if ti sorts your problem out :-

Step 1. Turn the PS3 off into standby (red light on)

Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep when you first press it, then beep again 5 seconds later. When you hear this second beep let go of the power button.

Step 3. The PS3 will restart and allow you to set the video settings up again.

If this does not work then there may be a problem with the actual dvd/blu ray settings. One way to sort this out is to manually check them yourself or simply return the PS3 back to default settings. If you want to do that, make sure you back up your game saves and other data before continuing.

To return your PS3 back to default :-

Step 1. Turn the PS3 off into standby mode (red light on)

Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep when you first press it and then beep 2 more times and turn back off into standby. Release the power button.

Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then there will be 2 quick beeps together. When you hear these 2 beeps release the power button.

Step 4. Your PS3 will restart and ask you to connect a controller via USB and press the PS button. Do this and then continue onto the next step.

Step 5. A menu will load with 6 options, choose option 5 "Restore PS3 system". This will reset your PS3 back to factory settings and wipe your hard drive. Agree to anything that comes up on the screen.

Hopefully this will sort your problem for you, if it does not then it is fair to say that there is probably some problem with the PS3 display chip and that usually is pretty terminal.

I hope this helps you out and thank you for using FixYa

This is not your problem. Replace it immediately and make sure they play a DVD and blueray there when you replace it for you.

You may void your warranty if you do something on it by yourself. So call the store where you got it and schedule a replacement. Either you deliver it there or they send a tech. If you want contact information about that. The warranty page is here.

    http://us.playstation.com/support/warran...

But I do think you have their contacts.

  • Donald Huang Sep 12, 2010

I did not post any link on the first post. Maybe it's a link from fixya about their link to some contact. That should not be having too much to do with this issue though.

Like Kelt67 said a firmware is needed....Avatar holds a lot of memory on the blu ray disc as that's one reason there are no trailers just strictly the movie and that's it on the blu ray....Avatar works perfectly fine in my PS3 but then my fiance tried watching on a regular Sony blu ray player and it just sits and loads forever....needs a firmware upgrade need to pop the firmware disc in and download by contacting your blu ray manufacture if no ethernet port on your blu ray player.

My new 3.15 ps3 won't play blu-ray but will play everything else no problem. no problems to play games or to play normal dvd's. When playing a blu-ray the UNIVERSAL part at the start of the movie plays...

f the Blu-ray Disc does not support 1080p 24Hz video mode, the video output may not display properly.

If a Blu-ray Disc movie is not loading properly or is freezing on a title screen, this may be caused by the PLAYSTATION 3 attempting to download BD-Live content from congested movie studio servers. If you experience this issue, you may choose to temporarily bypass the BD-Live content until the congestion at the movie studio servers has cleared.

Go to Settings icon (Settings) > Video Settings icon (Video Settings) > [BD Internet Connection], select "Confirm". Then reload the Blu-ray movie and the PLAYSTATION 3 will prompt you if you wish to allow the disc to access BD-Live content. Choose to not access BD-Live content to see if the movie will now load.
For some reason you seem to think this is a PS3 problem. Why do you think this is a PS3 problem? If you can play PS3 games, then I will say it is not a PS3 problem, as all PS3 games are on Blu-ray, and if you were having problems playing PS3 games, then that could account for the movie not working.

Since only the movie isn't working, I am going to say you have a defective Blu-ray disc. Did you just buy this movie, or have you viewed it before using the PS3? If you have never viewed it on the PS3, then the problem lies in the disc, and you need to take it back and have it exchanged.

If you have played the disc in the PS3 before (the PS3 you are having a problem with, not a different PS3 or Blu-ray player), or you still think it is a PS3 problem, then use the "Disc Troubleshooting" support page. Normally, if a Blu-ray movie will not play, it won't play at all, and it is because the Blu-ray laser has gone out. It sounds to me that the disc is bad, but this is only going on the information you have supplied.

Here is the Disc Troubleshooting support page mentioned above:http://playstation.custhelp.com/app/answ…

**EDIT**
Sorry, I just noticed you gave a UK link. Here is the support page for the UK. You will have to do a search on the site to find the Disc Troubleshooting page for your region.http://uk.playstation.com/support/

You will have to replace the laser in the blu-ray drive. It will run about 80 dollars just for the laser. If you need more information email me at ced70@hotmail.com

Thanks,

PS3 games play but DVD/Blu-ray will not

Sounds like a bad laser, but you should restore the PS3 back to Factory to see what happens.

If you get the same results it's definitely the laser.

Reads disc fine, then freezes

Start with a firmware update (make sure there is no disc in the drive when you do it)

Then do a System Restore.

If that doesn't work then it's probably a problem with your blu-ray drive itself. You might get by with just cleaning the laser.

Otherwise call Sony @ 1-800-345-SONY

My PS3 won't play DVDs or Blu-ray.

You may need to format the entire system and then update if you really need to watch the DVD that badly

you can move gamesaves to a memorystick before hand so you dont lost anything apart from demos and pics

pls rate.

PS3 80 GB - Error Code 8002991

Hi tomdonnatim,

If your PS3 is brand new, you most likely have to update the system's software to a more current version in order to properly play many Blu-Ray discs.

In order to update your PS3 system:
Go to the home menu, move to the "Settings" tab (the 2nd tab from the far left), scroll down to "System Update". It takes about 5 minutes to download and fully download the update, but it should solve the problem.

More information on the system update can be found below:
