You can hook up a standard monitor (15-pin vga cable) to the vga port on a laptop. Just go to your display settings (right click the desktop, properties, advanced tab) and set the proper settings there and you'll be good to go.

Where can I get a power cord for a Dell Ultrasharp Monitor # Mx-09j367-47605-31l-a5m7

The computer repair store nearest you or tv shop should be able to provide you with the power cord. They are standard in the industry.

My 2001FP shows the contrast cotrol greyed out and the screen has very low contrast, which I need to correct. I use it with a Dell Inspion 9300. The laptop screen has excellent contrast. The 2001FP...

I have four Dell 2001FP monitors. The unavailable contrast is standard for this monitor when used with digital input (DVI). Make sure your brightness is at 100%.If you want a better result of dynamic range and color, the only effective option is color calibration. I use the inexpensive Huey Pro, available
several places, including eBay. Retail is around $100. It something one uses maybe twice a year, takes five minutes to install and use, and the results are notable. I'm a designer, and need excellent color. This is the best solution. Calibrate your laptop as well, and the color should be almost exactly the same between them.

As an alternative, you can use the color settings, select User Preset, and start with something around 40 red 43 green and 37 blue. Adjust proportionately upward until you get what you want.

Another possibility is to use a different connector cable if your laptop has that option, since your monitor an take four different input formats.

Good luck.

I have an older Dell Ultrasharp monitor that is stuck in Powersav

Check that the "data" cable is tightly-connected at both ends.

Connect the data-cable to another computer (laptop?) to see if it works with the laptop.

Try another monitor with your computer, to see if your computer is putting out the correct video signals.

I need power cords for my monitor

The monitor needs a power cord and a signal cable. The power cord is a standard 3-prong detachable cord just like the one on nearly every desktop computer and many other electronic appliances.

The signal cable may be one of two types, depending on your computer's video connector. The monitor has connectors for both VGA (a D-shaped connector with 15 pins) and DVI (a rectangular connector) inputs. You need a cable with whichever type of connector fits your computer.

You should be able to find the power cord at Radio Shack, any of the big office supply places, or retailers who sell computers. The signal cable may be available there as well, or you can order from a number of online vendors.

The monitor also allows you to plug in a USB cable from your computer so you can plug in USB devices like a keyboard or mouse. For that you need the same kind of USB cable you would use to connect a printer.

You can view or download a copy of the monitor user's guide at Dell's site here:

Dell monitor back removal

This can go one of 2 ways..very easy or very hard.
Having said that here we go.
  • Get a towel and lay it on a flat surface.
  • Remove the 4 screws from the stand and remove it.
  • looking from under the monitor you should see 2 small notches between the front and rear covers.
  • Carefully insert a flat blade screwdriver (not too far) into the hole and lift upwards. It should pop. Do the same on both sides.
  • Carefully pop it all the way around (without using anything but light pulling pressure.)
Hope that helps =)

Side USB ports

You need to connect a USB cable from your PC to the USB port under the monitor.
It is a standard usb cable used by printers with a flat plug on one end and a squareish plug on the other.
You should also have 2 more usb ports under the screen as well. There are normally 4 on Dell screens. 2 side, 2 under, and the one square plug to connect to the PC.
