Turn off the power and check the fan capacitor first. You can do that with a multimeter with the capacitor check function.

The start capacitor has gone bad. Needs to be replaced. That's what's inside that bump on the side of the motor.

Sub zero. 650 reefer. Significant hum coming from top mounted compressor, but still marginal cooling. Now a louder hum and unit no longer cooling.

Hi roger,

I see you concern, and if the unit does not cool anymore and there is a humming noise then you will need to replace or have your compressor repaired no doubt.

Have a nice day,

My 3 yr old Whirlpool side-by-side has recently started making a loud humming/grinding noise when the motor starts. It lasts until the motor shuts off. It is an intermittent problem, but has been happening...

A good guess is the fan in the freezer is coming in contact with something. Most likely ice buildup which indicates a failure in the defrost section. If the noise is coming from the freezer side, just behind the food this is almost a for sure thing. It may just be going out as well, which is good because then you wouldn't have a problem with the defrost section :)

If the noise is coming from the back of the refrigerator at the bottom, what we have there is a compressor and a fan that keeps the compressor cool (called a condenser fan). If it's the condenser fan, it probably just needs to be replaced, and or adjusted from whatever it is coming in contact with. If it's the compressor, lets hope it's just rattling and can be tightened down. If it is something inside the compressor you will have to live with the noise or replace the compressor. The sad part is, replacing a compressor is generally not cost effective, at which point you buy a new refrigerator.

These are really the only three things that can make that type of noise. I hope I was of some help. If i can clear anything else up or answer anymore questions please let me know! good luck!

38CKC036 Air Conditioner: outside fan will not come on makes a humming noise...

If the humming is your compressor running (feel the large copper line going into the unit, it should feel cold aftter a few minutes of run time) then the fan motor or the capacitor or both need to be replaced, check for voltage to the fan motor when the unit is "humming" if it has voltage and will not start replace the fan motor and the capacitor. hope this helps.

I have a kenmore refrigerator, but for some reason it's not cooling. i've check back rear fan, it's working and i'v also check the inside fan removing the inside rear panel on the freezer side, and it's...

Is the compressor running?? If its hot but not running , humming and clicking sound you may have just a bad compressor relay. Or a bad compressor.
If your compressor is runing you have lost your freon.Leak or hole in system.

Kenmore Coldspot compressor kicking on and off

It sounds like you may have toasted one of the starting componets. Either the start relay or the start capacitor has probably failed, causing the compressor to try to start, and then kick off on overload. Hope this helps

A high pitched loud hum (about a C) is coming from the freezer

That is your compressor. The bearings in them go bad and overheat. Sometimes it will even keep the compressor from restarting. You need a compressor.

Please help our ac compressor wont come on

Hi, did you change, capacitor for compressor too. check compressor overload switch,(relay) normally located on compressor terminals, (where you connect wires to compressor) that's the device that goes klix when compressor goes to start, could be faulty, or maybe low voltage from your mains(house panel) check line voltage, with digital volt meter, some compressor won't start if voltage drops to low, yes fan will work, could also be, your compressor has a lock rotor, (hard start), you can buy a compressor hard start kit, from appliance store, and try to start compressor, or maybe compressor internal winding, are damage, especially now in summer, when you got a lots of voltage drops, check compressor winding, check compressor winding for short circuit, remove cover on compressor, remove 3 wires from compressor terminal, use ohm meter, put one tester lead on copper tubing that's connected to compressor, and next lead to compressor terminal, one by one, if you get beep (continuity) from anyone of those compressor terminal, you got a short- circuit in compressor, you will have to replace compressor, but if there's no short, them try hard- start kit, replace overload relay, you will see it at compressor terminal location, after you remove cover. good luck.

Ac unit is humming fan is not turning

hi there,
defective fan motor, this means stuck up motor the running winding is functioning but it can't star to drive your motor so the current inside motor produce vibration that why it create humming, several causes to be consider, bearing are worn out, defective fan capacitor, the fan is obstructed by object.there is no supply on starting capacitor, check if there fan relay overload protection reset it on control panel,
also,if humming is came from compressor, definitely because
fan is to reject heat,if no fan compressor will hum due to refrigferant in the system is not flowing,on high side, have this check by a/c technician nearewst on you.have a nice day dont fforget to rate me ,thank's
