According to IBM, no. the fastest CPU you can use for the 8479 is a 1.26Ghz, 512kb Cache, 133Mhz FSB, Socket 370 Processor PN 32P0652. Made by IBM.
Also known as a PIII-S. You can get one for around $12 on Pricewatch.
I personally think it might work if it's a 512kb cache 1.45v chip; If it was mine I might try it, but I can't find even anecdotal evidence of anyone trying it. I'd put it at a 50/50 chance of smoking your motherboard, CPU, or both.

Ibm xseries 226 is not initializing.. the fans start when i power onn the system but not more than 5-10 seconds.. and there is no display.. there is only one processor on board right now. pls help

If you are comfortable getting inside the PC here's some things you can try.
  1. Take the side panel off and pull the memory sticks out. Now turn the PC on without the sticks in it and listen for a screaming banshie. If you hear the screaming banshie it means *********** board should be okay. If you hear no noise at all there you may have a bad mother board. 6df7c5d.jpg
  2. While inside the PC unplug all cables for about 10 seconds and plug them back in. Do this one at a time so you don't loose track of where they go. Also carefully pull the processor out and plug them back in. Turn PC back on and test. 3513f7b.jpg
  3. Unplug the power supply from the mother board and plug it onto power socket by itself without having anything connected to it and see if it runs okay on it's own. If not it's probably bad.
  4. Last but not least If you know how to boot the PC into the BIOS configuration do so and check what temperature the PC is set to shut down at.

Hope this was helpful.
Good Luck

Do this model supporsts win xp service pack 2

Hi.

This unit has a Pentium 4 2GHz single core processor, and does support Windows XP SP2.

The standard memory installed on this unit was 256KB RAM, in order to run XP efficently you will need to upgrade the RAM. I suggest upgrading RAM to the maximum amount allowed of 2 GB RAM.

To upgrade the RAM to 2 GB you will need 2 modules of 1GB PC2100 184 pin DIMM ECC each.

Micron 1GB DDR RAM PC-2100 ECC

Why memory pairings are done in servers???

Memory that works in pairs is usually called "dual channel" memory. In older computers, information that needed to go into memory was streamed from the processor to the RAM area in a straight line. Data had to wait for the data before it to enter memory and then leave before it could go in. It's like a grocery store having 1 checkout line. Anyone that wanted to buy something has to get in line and wait. With dual channel memory configurations, it's like opening a second checkout line at the store. Twice as many people can check-out in the same amount of time. Here's an article with more details about how it works:
