Question about Singer Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I have an old Featherweight Singer which threads backwards. When I replaced the needle, and threaded the machine, every time it unthreaded after a few seconds sewing. We tried threading the other way as well - and had the same problem. Then it appeared that the thread was breaking off. What have I done wrong?!

Look at your model number on your machine, then go to singerco.com and you can download a copy of your manual, usually, for free. You could also call the customer service number at 1-800-4singer

The top needle unthreads after just a few stiches. I have a Singer 2950 and am new to sewing.

Are you saying that the thread is breaking?

CAUSES of upper thread breaking

needle is in backwards
improperly threaded
tension to tight
needle bent or blunt
thread to coarse for size of needle
needle too long for machine
burr on needle
tension discs worn so that thread works in grove
neele too fine for size of thread and fabric
lint or dirt around bobbin case holder
irregular sewing speed
AND THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS:
threads not properly pulled back under pressure foot when starting to sew
This means, Have enough of the upper and lower thread pulled to the back and hold for the first 2-3 stiches,

Do this every time and it will become second nature and you will do it automatically

Singer 301A needle breaks

do you have a book, refer to threading. This machine threads differently than most, threads like a 221 featherweight. Needle goes in backwards, and threads backwards. in wrong and you can have problems, also threading can cause your problem if you have missed tension or a thread guide. great little machine

Threading diagram for a 1941 Featherweight by singer My repairman sewed just great when I got it home it breaks threads all the time. I assume I am threading it wrong.

This machine threads from right to left in the needle and the flat side should be inserted to the left.Try this and let me know how it works.

Sewing machine either breaks thread or comes unthreaded every time i try to sew.

Your threading is not right, totally remove your thread and rethread according to the manual directions and dvd. If, you still have problems call Singer at 1-800-4singer

My thread often becomes unthreaded from the part that raises and lowers the needle causing the thread and fabric to jam up

Your needle should not come unthreaded in the middle of sewing.. if it does, it is because the thread breaks. this can be a simple tension problem or brittle thread.

if you are talking about at the beginning of sewing that the needle comes unthreaded, then you should just pull out 6-8 inches of thread through the needle before putting your fabric under and begin sewing.

i hop that helps.

Singer sewing machine

If you are using a threadcutter on the Left side of the machine, it may not leave enough slack when you go to start a new stitch, and as the needle decends, the thread is pulled through the eye.

Just try to pull a little more thread through before you recommence.......just why manufacturers would locate a threadcutter where it will not quite allow enough slack thread for the needle to move down for the next stitch without unthreading the needle is one of life's great imponderables.

Inserting needle on old singer machine

Hi Terry--

If your machine is 40-50 years old, it might be a Singer Featherweight portable. (If it is, you have one of the very best machines ever made!) On the Featherweights, the flat of the needle faces left (and the needle is threaded from right to left). The bobbin goes in a bobbin case; you'll see a small notch when you look down on the bobbin in the case. That's where the thread goes. I'll email you direct with more information.
