Question about Maxtor Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a Dell Demension 3000... I have a hard drive in it that has XP as the OS... I am trying to install a second hard drive as a slave and I want to install Windows 7 on that hard drive. I wiped the 2nd hard drive clean of all data. When I go to My Computer it only shows the original hard drive. How do I get the puter to recognize the second hard drive. When I go to the control panel is says the device is working properly

These computers will accept a second hard drive, (Master = C Drive & Slave = D Drive)

The easiest solution is just to install another hard drive which will then become the slave drive.

You can then transfer all your personal information onto this drive using windows explorer while leaving the bootup, operating system and any exisitng software on the exisitng drive. Any new software can then also be installed on the new slave drive.

All cables (IDE & Power) will already be within the computer but you may need to enter the BIOS at startup and select Auto Detect for the slave drive. You must also ensure that the new drive you install has the correct jumper setting i.e. Cable Select.

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. it would probably be easier to just swap the hard drives. then when you go to boot, put in an OS install cd (Mac OS X ; Windows XP ; Windows Vista ; Windows 7) and it will walk you through the steps and partition your hard drive for you.

Having Trouble Reinstalling XP on my Dell Dimension 3000

Here's what I would do. Download and burn any Linux disk. Install Linux and delete all partitions while doing so. After that, initiate the Windows XP installation and see if that works.

This will take care of two things:

If you can install Linux, then the hard drive is good and the partition that was previously on there will be deleted (I suspect the partition is locked which can be caused by a virus or the software used to scrub hard drive).

Check your CDs for Windows (for scratches) or it could be your actual CD drive is out (laser) which would make the installation fail. If the CDrom cannot read the disk, it locks up like that during installation...even if it read before.

Windows XP freezes up when trying to reinstall on my Dell

When you boot from the CD you will com to the point where it tell you that there is already a version of Windows XP installed. You will need ot follow the instuctions on the screen to delete the existing partion. Then and only then will it format the drive.

Let me know how this works out for you

HOW DO YOU INSTALL A SECOND OS ON A SLAVE DRIVE. I AM RUNNING WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION. I WANT TO INSTALL WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION ON A SLAVE DRIVE DISC. SOME PROGRAMS I HAVE WILL NOT WORK ON XP.

You cannot install 98 directly on your system slave drive, but there is a way to install it.

1) disconnect your primary drive
2) make your slave drive as primary.
3) install 98
4) Connect your actual primary drive again and start your system

XP records your mac id of your motherboard and 98 does not records, the other way is, you can install both the OPS on your one primary drive by creating different partitions, you will need to full format your drive first.

1) Full format your primary drive.
2) Create partitions.
3) Install 98.
4) Install XP in different drive of your same hard disk

You will be able to see both your OPS when you start your system.

Trying to add another internal hard drive to Dell Dimension 3000

Ok... one end of the ide cable goes to the board... make sure that's plugged in correctly and has a blue connector.... second... the last drive on the other end has to be the master... the drive before that is the slave... if that setup is not working ensure that the drivers are set for master and slave... also make the power is pluigged into both drives

You would have to contact dell for the OS disk.

I dont think you can install the hard disk in place of floppy drive. An external Hard disk would be a better option.
