Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

Hi. I have a model ED5NHGXR001 Whirlpool. Ser. # ST1045037. The motor is making a very loud, straining, grinding sound. It is not totally continuous, but it started intermittently yesterday (about 30 minutes at a time for a couple of times). It is now doing it today. It has not stopped so far (about 45 minutes). The refrigerator is still cold and seems to be working. I have tried unplugging and plugging back in, but the sound continues. What do you think needs to be done?

Hi,

Do you have any idea from where this noise is coming from?

Either the motherboard has a chattering relay or the compressor relay/overload is chattering. Your going to have to pull the panel off on the lower back and listen to the compressor relay and the mother board to figure which one it is.

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Whirlpool Model #: WTW4800XQ making a loud grinding noise during or at end of spin cycle. Help!

I have a similar model (WTW4850XQ1) that was making a very loud grinding/screeching noise during the agitation and sometimes the spin cycle. I unplugged and turned it on its front to get underneath and exposed the motor/transmission unit. Took the cover off the belt drive assembly and my drive gear was loose. Simple tightening down of the nut was an easy fix for me. But some times those plastic gears between the drive pulley assembly and transmission crack or the teeth wear down (think it's called the CAM). That is a fairly cheap and easy fix as well ($35). Repair Clinic website has free videos on how to diagnose and fix issues and parts as well. Worth a look.

Washer got very loud during spin cycle this continued and then when its spins it sound like the tub is grinding against something and also squeeling noise during washing.. and spinning.

HI,
This sounds like a leak under the unit and above the motor. I would suggest tipping the unit back, look unit the washer for milking brown residue on the cabinet and the motor area. If present you will need a new outer tub and this won't repair will not be cheap. I am sure this answer is not what you want to hear. If no residue, I would look into the pumps as you can have a foreign objects inside them and cause a-lot of noise during operation. But the only way to make sure if to look.
Hope for the best...

Won't spin and loud noise

Kenmore washers could hold a few problems. First, without a model number you don't know who makes it. See, Kenmore does not make washers, they have someone else make them such as Whirlpool or Frigidaire. More that likely you have a Whirlpool (which is a good thing). What you are probably hearing is the coupler of the machine broken. A coupler is what replaced a belt in the newer machines. This piece is installed in between the motor and transmission. If it breaks it makes a loud rattle/grind sound. It is possible that the transmission is also the culprit. However, this noise is entirely different. A bad transmission generally makes a loud screech noise. If this does not help, please post a model number of the washer and I will gladly further assist you :)

Grinding sounds

Grinding sounds that last for longer than 3 minutes at a time are usually an indication of something in the wash pump. If the grinding is only for about 2 minutes at a time it would be something related to the drain pump.

It depends on the make and model on how to clean out the pump or drain pump. If you happen to have a tall tub Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool or Kenmore this link has instructions on how to do that.

Motors for tall tub whorlpools are over two hundred dollars. If its less than a year then its under warranty. You did not indicate model. If you can get back to me I'll look more in to seeing if it is feasable to repair or replace.
