Generic problem for all Air Conditioners

I have a fairly new (by 2 users)

I have a fairly new honeywell thermostat (non-digital) the furnace works fine. Now it is time to turn on the central air & when set to cool there is no response/operation from the C/A unit. i understand this may be a wiring cross problem? Please advise on what to check.
