Remove spark plug and check for spark (plug base to engine metal)--it should be blue and snappy with a fresh plug gapped at 0.020". If looks ok, pour a little fuel mix into the plug hole and try for start. If it pops several times, you have fuel delivery problems. Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. When the carburetor was apart, did you note the condition of the diaphragm in the lower chamber--it should be flexible with no holes or cracks. Does the primer bulb fill with fuel when pumped several times? Hope some of this helps!

Yamaha kodiak 1984 runs with choke out a bit ,but once pushed in ,quad quit,s and and won,t start till you pull it out again some

Your carburation is dirty. Remove the carbs, clean, adjust float and re-install. Should be fine.

There are petrol at the inlet of the carburator, the float is fine but no petrol inside the carburator. Engine starts when fuel is added to carburator but lasts for about one min and stops.

there is a blockage in the carb. you really need to pull it apart and clean, use carb cleaner which is a water repellant if available. i am presuming petrol is flowing from fuel pipe ok.

Gas ran out of sparkplug hole

If you had raw gas in the cylinder to where it poured out of the plug hole you most likely have a carburator problem. Inside the carburator is a float and needle, the float pushes the needle into a seat when the bowl is full of gas so no more gas will flow into the bowl or the engine. If the float won't float or the needle is damaged or has dirt between it and the seat the gas will continue to flow into the carburator and on into the engine. If enough gas gets into the cylinder the starter won't be able to turn the motor over. You should also check your oil, usually when gas gets into the cylinder it runs into the crankcase and thins the oil to where it will damage the motor if run for any length of time.

I can get my trimmer started but when I try to accelerate the trimmer from idle it stops

sounds like typical carburator issues.Pull carb apart and clean jets if it idles than slow jets are good so its more than likely your high idle jet.

I've got a 1985 honda vf500c. It runs perfect when it is moving, but when I come to a stop and pull in the clutch, the engine takes a few seconds before returning to idle speeds and will stall if I don't...

More than likely, the idle (pilot) jet is partially clogged. This is common when it will idle fine with the choke on, but won't idle without it. Sometimes a fuel treatment will clean the carburator, but not usually successful in cleaning the idle jet. Usually it requires removing the carburator bowl and and cleaning with the use of a gauge wire. The idle jet is usually recessed (next to the main jet).

A good video to show a generic carburator rebuild can be found at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exa467_eoXw The guy goes through a pretty detailed description while going throught the process. The carburator will not look exactly like yours, but it will be similar internally.

Hi,i`ve got a yamaha fz750 1988..and it won`t seem to run on all four cylinders..i took the air box off and while it was running put my hand over each carb one at once and found that on carb 4 it stopped...

Hi JIm,
If it stopped @ 4 tht means thts the only cylinder firing .
Remove the spark plugs, earth @ on the cylinder head, crank start and check for sparks...if its sparking tht means the coils etc. are ok.
As the spark plugs are out exam them to their conditions visit this site for more details :-
http://www.spark-plugs.co.uk/pages/technical/diagnosis.htm

From here you would know if its carburator or probably it may need a complete tune up....carburator cleaning, float level..adjustment, valve clearance.. new plugs (gap to specs.), check air filter, replace or fit 'inline' fuel filter thn balancing of the carbs.
Hope this helps!
