If your refrigerator is not cooling, the problem could be as simple as a covered vent or something more complicated that requires the help of a service professional.

First of all, give your refrigerator 24 hours to come to the correct temperature after plugging it back in.

Is your refrigerator crammed with items or are air vents covered? Overfilling, especially near vents, can prevent cool air from flowing around items. Reduce the amount of food and drink inside your refrigerator, and be sure to leave vents clear.

Are your door gaskets damaged or worn, allowing cool air to escape? Try this test of your gaskets: Place a piece of paper or a dollar bill between the closed door and the refrigerator frame. If you can pull it out easily while the door is closed, it's time to replace the seals.

If there's ice on the evaporator cover ( typically found on the back wall of the freezer), it's a sign that the evaporator coils inside could also be covered in ice and frost, indicating a defrost problem. Try unplugging the fridge and defrosting it before calling for help.

Is the compressor (the football-sized case on the outside back of the refrigerator) making a continuous hum or other noise? A constant noise could indicate a serious problem with one or more components. This is a repair that should be left to a refrigerator service expert.

If you hear a clicking noise every few minutes, this means your condenser is trying to work but can't. To see if a dirty condenser is to blame, check the condenser coils. These are usually found on the back or the underside of the refrigerator. If they are dirty, clean them. For instructions, see How to clean refrigerator coils and fan.

If your condenser coils are clean, the problem could be the start relay, which triggers the compressor. Have a refrigerator repair pro determine if the start relay is the culprit and to replace it if necessary.

"you are right that cleaning under your refrig wont get rid of a "compressor knocking" sound. what it might do is to lower the amount of heat from the condenser coils and thus cause less pressure and stress on the compressor making it run easier and less likely to bang or knock when shutting off.
if your coils were very plugged with lint and you have cleaned them, that will help but it wont "fix" the problem.
inside the compressor is a motor and a pump, the motor is supported by 3 springs and they can stretch or break causing the motor to hit one side of the black outer can and cause the noise.
that may be too technical, but its not something that can be repaired without replacing the compressor, at a cost of 700-800 bucks. most would not pay this as its not worth putting that amount of money into an older refrig."

"think that you are hearing either a freon related sound or even just the sounds of the unit going thru defrost.
how often do you hear the noise? just maybe once a day or is it everytime the unit shuts off?
either way i would rule out the ice maker and water system as when the "shut off arm" is up then it is off and wont make any noise, or ice.
keep the i/m arm up and then listen for the next day or two and try to narrow down when it makes the noise and frequency you hear it and then get back to me.
it may not even be a problem, just normal operating sounds that cant be changed."

Refrigerator not cool, freezer ok

Either the freezer continues to freeze up (most likely due to low refrigerant, due to a leak), or there is an obstruction between the freezer and the refrigerator (refrigerators get their cooling from the freezer).

Given that it works after you defrost it, I'm going with low gas. Call a professional to see if the leak can be fixed. If the unit is more than 10 years old, just get a new one.
