Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a Maytag Neptune TL washer that won't drain. I took the front panel off and detached the hose from the pump and there were several coins in there. I removed the coins, reattached everything and tried to run another load. But when it attempts to drain, I hear a rattling - almost like more coins but they are in the drum of the washed somewhere. I have no idea how to get inside the drum to look for floating coins. Do you have any suggestions?

For the FAV6800A or FAV9800A tumbler removal.

The Service manual has the procedure starting on page 37 for the tumbler removal.

It’s not difficult to remove the manual doesn’t call out the Torx driver size required for tumbler removal. You will need a number 20 Torx driver to remove the Torx screw for tumbler removal. I would get a long Number 20 Torx driver for this. See page 37 of the Service Manual for tumbler removal. Looks worse than it is.

The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.
When I did a recent Outer Tub Bearing replacement I found $1.78 in coins after removing the wash basket. Gotta check those pockets....:)

I have a post around somewhere of my diy Sump Screen I put in my FAV6800AW to protect the drain pump impeller from coins and other stuff from breaking the impeller or causing clogs. I'll look for the post or repost the pic's.........D*ick

Thanks for the update. I was able to get the plates out and found a LOT of change under each of them - enough to pay for a new torx wrench, at least :^D

Thanks to everyone for the excellent service. My washing machine is now running as good as new!

Leaking maytag neptune washer

The pump and its various hoses are easily accessable through the back panel. The boot can collect coins which can block the pump. Squeeze the boot and empty it of all coins. Coins can ruin the impellers on the pump. A new pump costs $100 on line. The drain hose can be plugged by dimes and pennies. Good luck.

Belt, Water Pump If the washer won't drain the pump belt might have broken or might have worn out. Check the belt and replace if it shows signs of excessive wear.

Drain Pump If the washer won't drain water the drain pump might be defective. It's also common for a small sock or other article of clothing to get caught in the drain pump or in the drain hose. Check both for an obstruction before replacing the pump.

Clogged Pump or Hose If the washer won't drain there might be a clogged pump or hose. It's common for small socks or other small clothing items to get into the water drain system and clog the hose leading to the pump or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump in order to remove the article of clothing. Keep in mind that any water in the washer will pour out of the hoses when removed.

Drive Belt If the washer won't drain, should check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't drain properly, if at all.

Lid Switch Assembly If the washer won't drain the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly If the washer won't drain the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Drain Hose If the washer won't drain water check the drain hose. Be sure the hose did not get kinked behind the washer. Also, remove the hose from the pump and check it for obstructions.

Coin Trap If the washer won't drain the coin trap may be clogged. This washer is equipped with a device near the water pump called a coin trap. The purpose of this device is to trap any foreign materials that make their way down the drain. Normally, the coin trap can be accessed through an access panel. It is designed with the homeowner in mind and is normally easy to clean out.

My maytag washer leakes, all the water runs out on the floor.

Remove the rear access panel to check the source of the leak. The drain pump is most probably broken or the sump hose is damaged or detached from the tub.

Drain Pump Removal/Replacement Procedure (Maytag Neptune MAH5500B)
  1. Safety first. Unplug the machine.
  2. Remove the hose clamps and hoses from the pump.
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness from the pump and the pressure switch terminals.
  4. Rotate the pump assembly counterclockwise and remove it from the base of the washer.
  5. Remove the plastic bag covering the pressure switch.
  6. Press in the locking tabs on the back of the pressure switch and pivot the pressure switch off the pump bracket.
  7. Grasp the pressure switch and lift the nipple off the pump cap.
  8. Install the pressure switch on the new pump in reverse order of the removal steps.
