Dryer belt is loose, how to adjust tension in idler arm?

It sounds like you didn't install the belt onto the idler pulley in the correct S-shape. The idler pulley should always keep the belt tight under spring tension (no adjustment screws).
Here is a video, and tho it is a completely different model, almost all dryer belts/pulleys are installed in this manner. You can skip to the 2:30 to 2:45 time frames, where it then shows exactly how to re-install the belt on the idler pulley.

What is the belt diagram from the deck to the motor for a mower?

1st, Unplug the Dryer from the Power Supply.
You will need the Exact recommended Replacement "Idler Pulley".
With the Belt Ribs Facing Toward the Dryer Drum, position the belt on the tell tale Ring Mark on the Drum letting the Belt Hang Down below the Drum.
Place The New Idler Pulley into the Slots on the Inside Dryer Bottom located near the Motor Mounted Pulley.
(Face The Idler Pulley Toward The Motor Mounted Pulley)
(Hold the Idler Pulley in place in the slots)
Take the "Hanging Belt" & run the Whole Loop "UNDER" the Idler Pulley & then
Attach the "Belt Loop" "AROUND" The Motor Mounted Pulley.
That should do it.
Put the rest of the Dryer Back Together...Done!
Good Luck,
Vinnie

Most dryers are tension idler pulley directed but must first go around the grooved pulley on the motor shaft. make sure the idler goes on the smooth side of the belt and the grooved side of the belt is in the grooves on the motor shaft.

How do I replace the heating element in Maytag Dryer SDE2606AYW Serial# 12508837EN

1.Unplug the Maytag dryer from the dryer electrical outlet and pull the dryer away from the back wall.Use a putty knife to press in the locking clip between the front and top panels. While pressing the clip in with the putty knife, lift the top panel up to unlock it from the clip.Raise the top panel into the service position allowing it to rest on the back hinges.
2.Locate the door switch connection on the inside front right corner of the Maytag dryer.Press the locking tabs in with your fingers and pull the wiring harness away from the door
switch. With a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the screw on both inside corners that secure the front panel to the sides. Lift the front panel up and away from the dryer.
3.Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the four retaining screws that secure the drum bulkhead to the front of the side panels. Remove the bulkhead from the dryer.Reach under the drum and pull the idler pulley to the left to release the belt tension.Remove the belt from the motor and idler pulley. Lift the drum up and out of the dryer unit bringing the belt with it.
4.Remove the two screws that secure the heating element to the rear bulkhead with a Phillips-head screwdriver.Disconnect the heating element terminal wires by grabbing them with needle-nose pliers at the wire leads and pulling them off of the terminals.
5.Place the new Maytag dryer heating element into the dryer and slip the wire leads over the terminals.Secure the heating element to the rear bulkhead with the retaining screws.Lift the drum and belt and place the drum back inside the dryer cabinet.Route the belt around the motor and idler pulley.Shift the idler pulley back to the right to apply belt tension.
6.Reattach the front bulkhead to the dryer using the four retaining screws.Position the front panel into place and secure it to the sides with the retaining screws.
7.Bring the top panel back down and push the front corners in to engage the locking clips.Push the Maytag dryer back into its working position and plug the power cord back into the dryer electrical outlet.

A constant clicking noise near the motor of my maytag dryer. seems something is slipping as occasionally the drum and belt slow down

It sounds as if the idler bearing has started to fail see this picture http://sites.google.com/site/sublimeappliancerepair/_/rsrc/1246721031553/washer-will-not-spin/agitator-woes/dryer-will-not-work/how-do-i-get-inside-my-dryer/gas-dryer-quits-heating/more-gas-dryer-enlightenment/gallery-of-dryer-parts-locations-and-diagrams/frigidaire-gibson-kelvanator-dryer-101/kenmore-whirlpool-englis-roper-dryer-notes/ge-dryer-repair/maytag-norge-amana-crosley-basic-repair-info/Norge%20dryer%20with%20drum%20removed.jpg

The idler pulley in the picture is behind the motor.

I would check the ilder pulley to see if it rotates freely and does not have any odd side to side movements. If it does then replace the idler pulley and belt.

NOTE: Before you remove the idler pulley and belt note carefully the installation position of the belt, idler arm, spring and the idler pulley. For a first timer trying to do this it can be quite frustrating to get them all positioned correctly.

I hope this has been useful information to you. Good day.

Idler spring came off when belt broke, not sure correct placement for spring and idler pulley

Takes patients but can be done. First place idler arm in position then connect spring. Try and hold firmly while you place belt through pulley and fold around motor shaft. If installed right ,the pulley will maintain a constant pressure on the belt.
