Question about Craftsman Lawn Mower Ignition Switch Ayp 163968
You will find this odd, but the engine may need the valve clearances adjusted to cure this problem. These engines have a built in compression release which is operable at engine speeds 300 rpm and lower. The compression release makes it easier for the engine to turn over during startup and also relieves wear and tear on the starter. Most people don't know of this, and even with a new battery, the built up compression can stop the engine from turning or severely slow it down.
Adjusting the OHV system is relatively easy and there are many tutorials and even YOU TUBE videos showing exactly how it is done. They recommend you do this once a year to keep things in order. Until you do, grasp the top of the engine and turn it backwards by hand until you feel it undergoing no compression...then where it gets tight, stop turning it and try to start it.
