Yes you can. Make certain you set the channel selection you are going to record to the imput that the box is connected to. For instance if the box is on AV2 set that. Make certain the box is powered up and on the station you want to record. Also if the VCR has PDC make sure that is switched off. This will mean setting the times inbetween the TV show you want to record. For instance if you want to record a show that runs from 9pm to 10pm, you will have to set it to 8.59 and at least 10.01 or more, depending on if the station doesn't run to advertised times.
If the PDC is left on it will sit there and do nothing.

How can I record tv programs to watch later?

To get the VCR to record a digital signal it will need a digital tuner. As most were not fitted with them you need a set top box connected via a scart socket. The box will have to be set manually to the station you want to record. You can do a timer recording with the VCR just like before. But you must sent the channel to the scart socket which has the box connected to it. Also don't have the PDC control set to on (if it has one).
If you are thinking about buying a new model to record, consider if you want to keep the recordings. If you do go for a DVD recorder. If you don't go for a hard disc recorder.

C an a VHS recorder still work for digital?

Yes! All you need to do is get a box and connect it via the other scart socket. When you want to record anything set the timer to record in the same way as before, but change the channel to the AV socket the box is connected to. If the VCR has a PDF setting switch it to off. Remember to allow extra time either side of the programme you want to record. And leave the box on of course! Set top boxes are cheap by the way.

Awa dvd recorder dr711 can this be connected to a set top box

If it's like the DR620 it will only receive analogue from the TV aerial. I connect the AV out connections on my set box to the inlet AV on the recorder and watch and record through the recorder's "rear AV input" selection.
