Therostat is stuck and need to replace immidiatly since it will create much more serius problem like compresor burning.
Until you have someone check it out you need to manualy switch it off for half an ahour every six ours or one hour every eight hours so it make the compressor relax and at the same time to have a natural defrost.
Thermostat replacing is not very expensive however compressor replacement which means freon gas recharge and freon filter can go up to $350

The thermostat is most likely not functioning properly. As this not detect the required temperature inside fridge. When thermostat failed to detect it the compressor motor also ignore it and keeps on running.

You should inspect also the timer. It could have been set to fast. Try to turn it clockwise. You'll probably hear a ticking sound when you turn the control timer.

There is a control on refrigerator that controls the amount of cold air that is directed from freezer to refrigerator section. Locate that control and lower the amount of cold air going into refrig.

Everything is freezing in the vegetable drawer

For this problem, its indicating towards problem with damper assembly.----------

The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. ----------- The damper is operated by a motor. Its a complete damper assembly with motor included in it.--The damper has door.Which closes and open with the help of motor. In your case the damper door is remained open, its not closing.Due to this the cool air from freezer section is running in to fridge section non-stop.Due to this the vegetables and other food in the bottom drawer freezing.--------- In this problem the damper assembly needs to be replaced.---------------

This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

I have a Whirlpool GI5FSAXVY. The vegetables are freezing in the vegetable bin located under the ice maker. I set the tempture to 40 degrees and the problem continues. Can you help correct this? Thank you.

Hello,

Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for.

Also check the plastic air deflector at the top rear of the frig had been knocked off. I replaced it and all is OK. I thought you might add this to your suggestion list. As you know, the deflector directs the freezer air toward the front of the frig and the rear of the cold control.

Hope this will helpout in solving the problem..

Vegetables in vegetable bin are freezing. Everything else OK, settings are for less than normal cold.

Good day,
Usually a cold weather issue.
If the machine is getting light service, then that can add somewhat to the problem.
The issue here is how much the machine runs per day,or more important, how much time it's off.
When it runs less because of cool dry conditions, the freezer will run less.

As far a food freezing only on the bottom of the fresh food section,
The longer off times contribute to that. Cold air, on the off cycle drift from the freezer compartment thru the returns into the bottom of the fridge2_bing.gif section, which can cause that problem.

This is all based on the design of the machine, which has one compressor and one fan circulating motor.

Hate to sound corny, but, if you find a house with 7 kids and a stay at home Mom, who cooks all the meals, the door openings are high enough that this problem can't occur.

I purchased a bottom freezer Amana refrigerator when we built our house in 1999. The produce in the vegetable drawer keeps freezing! Everything else in the fridge is fine. Why does this happen?

Usually on bottom freezer fridges, there are two vents at the bottom of the freezer compartment where the cold air goes back into the freezer (cold air enters the fridge through the vent at the top/back of the fridge.)

If the vents at the back of the fridge are covered, the cold air will settle to the bottom of the fridge after it enters, and freeze your vegetables. The problem could be caused by ice build up in the evaporator coil of the freezer section also, but this will probably warrant a checkup from a pro.

One thing that can cause ice to build up inside those vents is moist air seeping in through a faulty door gasket. A thin coat of ordinary Vaseline on the gasket surface can help it make a better seal.

Whirlpool gold:upper half of refridgerator side not cold

Either the evap fan has a problem, or the defrost system has failed. You should never see frost in the freezer section as the defrost sensor should sense that the coils need to be defrosted before that much frost accumulates.

Unplugging to clean out helped because the frost got a chance to melt away.

If you find the evap motor is running, then the things to check are the defrost sensor, the defrost timer, and the defrost heater.

Reply back if you would like more info.
