Question about Kenmore 98702 Stacked Washer/Dryer

1 Answer

I have a Sears Kenmore stackable Washer/Dryer model # 417-98702891 and my dryer has a squealing noise that gets louder after running; it starts out periodically then becomes constant after about 5 minutes when drying my laundry. This has happened before and when it occurred the last time there was even a small amount of smoke coming out from around the unit; I had a friend come and pull it out of the close and I believe he just cleared away some lint dust and applied some type of lubricant/engine oil but he told me that he felt it would probably occur again soon and I needed to replace the unit. I would like to avoid purchasing a new unit and would be willing to pay for repair for a replacement part if that would address this problem but of course I do not want to find out that it could not be fixed then paying for both the repair person and then a new W/D unit. Any recommendations or areas to consider?

These dryers will make a noise from the front caused by the front guide wearing out. It can be replaced by removing the front panel and door on the dryer.

There is a ball and socket bearing on the rear that could squeak but is not normally a problem. It can be replaced or lubed.
Part 20 and 23 is your felt guides and 12,13 and 5 are your back bearing parts.

I have a Sears Kenmore stackable Washer/Dryer Model # 417-94862302 and my dryer has a squealing noise that gets louder after running also. It starts out periodically then becomes constant after about 5 minutes when drying my laundry also. But please anyone with this problem please check behind the drum, their was lint and Thank God I was home with my wife sitting right near it, we smelled smoke and what was happenig was the lint that gets stuck behind the drum, in the back of the drum where the little holes are and the lint caught fire. Like I said good thing my wife and I where sitting there, I had to put water on it, to put out the lint fire. So if anyone hears that squealing noise from these types of dryers or other types, please check behind the drum where the little holes are for lint. It could save lives and any homes. Also never leave a dryer running and then leave the house. I Thank God we never did.

    Thank You

The model that you provide is incomplete. However, if the washer loads from the top, they cannot be separated. If it loads from the front, they can.

Noisy dryer......when engaged...making squeaking/squealing noise.

If the noise is like a shaking of rattling , like coins being shaked , then it is an object trapped inside the drum.

If instead the noise is a loud grinding , that may get louder on high speed, then it is usually a bad drum bearing.

If dryer is not cooling, check that the noise is not coming from the ventilation fan.

Rollers and belt tensioner can also make noise.

Kenmore stackable dryer makes squealing sound. need to find out where to get replacement belt. heard people say open it up and replace the belt but we dont know where it opens up.

probably not belt most likely rear drum bearing which means a complete tear down of dryer from front console, rop and front panel will have to be removed then drum will need to be lifted up out of bearing cup belt removed part is avaiable from sears .com or local parts house unit is made by fridgedaire
