I have a x4850 Lexmark printer. The laptop is a Dell Vostro 1500 with Windows XP loaded on it. Our computer is a AMD 64 Athlon X2 built by our son-in-law. It has Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 loaded on it with Service Pack 3. Does this information help?

    Thanks for your help,
    Karen

We don't have a router. What I really want to do is set up the printer (a WiFi type) so that I can print from my laptop. Do I need a router to do that?

    Thanks for the insights.

Karen, Thanks for the detailed report. I can't see anything about the router. The router is the center for all the connections. All the computers are connected (wireless or with cable) at the router and this is the way for communicating among each other. What is the model for your router.

Waiting clarification, don't hesitate to post.

    Thanks and regards

Since you want to connect a wireless printer and two (or more) computers, you need the router. As I mentioned before it's the device that will split all the connections too the computers and the other peripherals. Maybe we could find a solution without the router but in that case we ban't use the printer as wireless, we have to connect it direct at one of the computers. Are you sure that there is no router available? Are the computers connected at the internet?

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.
If you are satisfied, accept my solution.

    Thanks and regards

Since all you need is to print from your laptop at this Lexmark printer, there is no need to use a router; you can connect your laptop with the printer direct using the USB connection (both of the devices have one USB port).
The router is necessary in order to connect the printer with all the computers using the wireless connection.
In case you just need the first solution post me back to give you detailed steps.

To confirm what type of Encryption is set up in your wireless network. Login to the router via Web browser.

Enter the IP address of the Router in the browser and you will be able to access the router and find what type of security option is enabled.

What is the wep password

The encryption key secures your data from unauthorized access.
The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

Setting secured wireless connection

You can enable WEP on your router.

In the address bar of your browser, type 192.168.0.1 to access the setup page of the Dlink router.

By default the username is admin and leave the password blank.

On the Setup page, go to Wireless.

Security Mode should be WEP then click Next.

You can change the WEP KEY 1. Make sure you remember this because you will need to enter this on your wireless computer.

Save the settings.

I hope this helps!
