Question about Passport 8500 Radar Detector

1 Answer

I get laser alerts all the time. Sometimes when the car first starts but also intermittently as I drive. It's been doing this for months. It started giving these false alarms in my Chevy Tahoe and has continued with my new Honda accord, regardless of RPM of the engine. The Passport 8500 X50 is about 3 years old. tls@lhtech.com

Yes I hope. I've cleaned the device as instructed so now I just need to test it, to see if the problem goes away.

After driving about 70 miles this afternoon and not a single false laser alarm I think your advice has fixed the problem.
    Thank you.

Hi

Please check this related link regarding your query :-

Unscrew the three screws, pop the three components apart (it really is a no-brainer since they only fit back together one way. Use canned air to blow everything out and just use the Q-tip on the front window and the parts that looked like the detector window internally.

Please accept the solution if it’s helpful. Do get back to us for any further query.

The idle circuit on the KE and KF Laser carby engines is controlled by the ignition module inside the distributor. The symptoms are intermittent stalling. There are also windings inside the distibutor that should be replaced at the same time as the module because these can short out the module.

Intermittent starting

the starter selenoid is most like bad or you could have a short in the wire to your starter causing heat to build. Heat causes battery to not be able to turn the cars engine. waiting lets the resistance to disapear. and the cycle continues

I WILL BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE CUTS OFF

Do you have a big bunch of keys swinging from the ignition switch? Sometimes the weight of lots of keys wears out the contacts in the back of the switch and you end up with an intermittent case of the car dying. Try wiggling the key when you are driving and see if that creates your problem. If that is your problem, the only fix is a new ignition switch. This problem won't give you a code because, so far as the computer is concerned, you have switched off the engine and switched it back on again.

Have tried getting quality gasoline at a reliable station? It sounds like water in your fuel system. Add a couple bottles of Iso-Heet fuel system dryer everytime you fill up the next few times, and that should cure it.

8500 Alerts for no aparent reason

Got to the bottom of my false alarming situation. I finally called Escort and discussed the behavior with the technician who immediately concluded the antenna was failling and needed a repair. $30 worth of shipping and about a week later I got my repaired unit back and it works perfectly. Not sure the root cause but I am going to treat it as gently as possible and hope it keeps working, I sure like it better than the V1.
