The timer control knob seems to be free wheeling & no longer clicks when you turn it. We looked at a web site that sells parts & think it might be the timer, does that sound right?

Hi, It has something to do with the timer, that I can tell you.
Some timer knobs must be pushed in to rotate them, Others timer knobs must be pulled out. And, of course, some timers you just turn.
If you can turn the knob and it spins but the pointer on the timer does not spin. It is the knob assembly itself. Possibly just loose.
If you can turn the knob and the pointer on the timer rotates freely without any type of click or resistance, The timer is failed.
If it is the knob, you should be able to pry off the center piece with a very small screwdriver and check to see if the know is loose.
Maytag has used different types of mechanisms in their timers. So good investigation will help in the determination.
If the symptom you are experiencing is that the machine doesn't run. Other things can be the cause of that. An inoperative door switch will render a clothes dryer silent.
I hope this helps,
Good Luck,
Mark

The knob on the right just turns (no clicking) so it does not seem to be selecting a time. now dryer wont start.

Check your timer knob. On these GE dryers I have found a lot of times the knob cracks where the stem of the timer goes in and the resistance of the timer will make ti slip internally rather than turning the knob. If the knob appears to be ok, then I would say you definitely have a bad timer on your hands.
Timer is part number WE4M271 and runs around $100 from marcone's
Knob is
WE1M654 and is around 18$

Good ;uck with this!!

How to remove timer knob from Kenmore washer, model #29422800

I can't remember if the timer has to be pushed in or pulled out to remove it, but the timer knob comes off by turning it in a counter-clockwise direction. Once the knob is off, the clear plastic dial underneath should pull off. There is a single screw under the dial that holds the timer in place. You can access the timer by popping the operator console up. There is a release tab in the front corner of the console on each side. Simply slide a putty knife under the console at each front corner and push straight in from the front. The console will lift up after each tab is released.

If you have questions, or need further advice, please let me know.

PS Is there a particular reason why you are trying to remove the knob? Do you suspect a defective timer? Some problems may give symptoms that make it appear to be timer related, but it may not. I just don't want you to spend money on a timer unnecessarily, if the problem is attributed to something else that is less expensive.

The dryer timer knob won't set, therefore when you push to start, nothing happens

Try to twist the outside ring around the timer knob. The knob could be faulty and freewheeling, so turning the outside ring (I'm assuming you have a mechanical timer, not an electronic one) does the same thing as turning the knob while it is "out". When you've set the timer, then push the knob in to start. Hope this helps - I made some assumptions about your machine that I hope are correct... Good luck.

Dryer just stopped working. Turned knob to desired time and pushed start, nothing happens. When knob is on OFF position and I push the start button, it makes the regular BUZZ sound - times up, clothes...

Remove and inspect the timer knob for a crack or missing tension clamp.
Carefully place it back on the timer shaft while paying attention to the (D) shape in the knob and the shaft.
If they are aligned correctly notice where the position arrow is pointing, ie; off---run--etc.
You may well need a new knob.

Removing Timer knob on Kenmore Electric dryer

Normally, to remove the timer knob, simply push in on the timer knob and turn the knob counter clockwise. it should unscrew itself. If it does not, the shaft inside the timer has broken and the shaft simply free wheels so then you need to take a needle nose pliers to hold the shaft and then you can turn the knob or pull it off

Let me know if you have any further questions
