Clean the scanner glass. I haven't worked on the 3390, but lift the scanner cover up and clean the glass and see if there is a narrow piece of glass to the left of the big flat bed glass. That is what's causing the line. Scrub it with a little glass cleaner. I bet you don't get the line when you use the flat bed single sheet scanner.

My 4600 is running a black line down the center of the page. Before I open another toner I want to find out if there is any other reason this is happening.

The black line is either coming from the toner cartridge or the transfer belt. You can usually see a line on the transfer belt if that is the cause. Just open the large fron door and look at the transfer belt that is mounted inside the door. If you can see a line of toner on it similar to what you see on the page then there is your cause. You can also look at the drum in the black toner cartridge to see if there is a line on it as well. That should elp you determie wether to change it or not. Are you using remainufactured toners or OEM HP?

Copies have a thin line running the length of the page slightly left of center

The toner drum has a scratch on it. The only fix is to replace the toner cartridge or the drum if it is separate from the toner.

Printing black line down middle of page when coping

The fuser is located in the back of the printer. I think it's held in by to screws. It's about hte same size as the toner cartridge. Please visit these websites.

Black lines on every copy

Good morning Jean,
A mark that is three inches apart can either be the drum, which is part of your toner cartridge, or the fixing assembly, which heats the toner and makes it stick to the paper. With both problems you are describing it could be either of these. The easiest way to figure out which it could be would be to replace your toner and see if the problem persists or if the machine is fixed. If you rub you finger on the left side of the page where the problem is does the toner rub off? If this happens then the fixing assy needs to be replaced. It could also be a combination of both problems. If you replace the toner it could fix part of the problem or vice versa.
Hope this helps

Copies and faxes come out with 5 inch black area over whole page

Does this same thing happen if you just print a report out of it?

Here's the logic behind this.

If it happens on scanning or copying, but not on printing that's a problem with the scanning section.

If it happens on everything (scanning, printing etc) that's a problem with in the printer controls.

Usually on lasers, if it's printing related, the first thing to do is change the toner.
If the imaging drum (which is part of the toner cartridge) is damaged, it will leave lines down the page.
This is a fairly common problem on refilled toners.

If you have changed the toner, and it still does it, it's a different problem.

HP LaserJet 4 plus Printer

First try changing out the toner cartridges since it is the cheapest option. If this doesn't work check the fuser unit by opening the back door and see if there is a line worn down the miidle. One other option may be the transfer roller that sits under the toner cartridge. It may be worn.

Laser cartridges with chips

you need to replace the chips so it will read the amount of pages printed by the toner cartridge. This chip is only for measuring how many pages printed.
