When i click on my firewall icon i get the following message: Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service? What does this mean? I am trying to turn on my firewall.

This is an error when some crucial Firewall services are not running. Make sure that the following services are running and are set to start automatically:
Windows Firewall (MpsSvc)
CNG Key Isolation (KeyIso)
Base Filtering Engine (BFE)

The issue definitely is associated with Norton. I have Norton Internet
2009. To get rid of the error, the following needs to be done.
* Right Click on the Norton Protection Center Icon from the system tray
* Select Norton Internet Security
* Click Settings
* Under Basic Security, click Auto-Protect
* Click Configure
* Under Real-Time Protection, take the checkmark off "Turn on scanning for Micorsoft Office documents"
click start, then run, then type services.msc a box will appear, scroll down to the windows firewall service and right click on it, make sure it is started, then check your settings again,

This usually happens due to missing or corrupt SharedAccess reg key, which represents the Windows Firewall Service. Resolution
Download sharedaccess.reg (for Windows XP SP2 only) and save to Desktop. Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows (mandatory step, otherwise the following NETSH command will display an error message).
After restarting Windows, run the following from Command Prompt (cmd.exe)
NETSH FIREWALL RESET
Launch firewall applet from Control Panel, and then configure your Windows Firewall settings.

Solutions
The following solutions should be tried in the order they are presented. If the first solution does not correct the issue, proceed to the next solution; if that solution does not correct the issue, proceed to the last solution.
Solution one
Uninstall and then reinstall the software using the following procedure:
Uninstall the software by inserting the software CD that came with unit into the CD-ROM drive on the computer.
NOTE:
If the startup screen does not appear, double-click the My Computer icon, then double-click the CD-ROM icon where the all-in-one disc is inserted. Choose the Uninstall option. If the Uninstall option does not display, the software is not completely installed. Proceed to step 2.
Install the software by inserting the software CD that came with unit into the CD-ROM drive on the computer.
NOTE:
If the startup screen does not appear, double-click the My Computer icon, and then double-click the CD-ROM icon, where the all-in-one disc is inserted. Choose the Install option.
Run the Software Update from the HP Director and apply all patches.
Solution two
Uninstall the all-in-one software using the CD that came with the unit, by following the steps in Solution one above.
After the software is uninstalled, restart the computer.
Install the all-in-one software by following the steps in Solution 1 above. After installation is complete, verify that the unit works correctly.
Change the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service from Automatic to Manual by performing the following steps:
Right-click My Computer , then select Manage . The Computer Management window opens.
in the Computer Management window, click the plus ( + ) sign next to Services and Applications .
In the list below Services and Applications , select Services .
In the right-hand side of the window, right-click Windows Image Acquisition .
Select Properties .
Change Startup Type to Manual .
Click OK .
