Yes, you probably were told correctly...check the relay and cap first though...
Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then…

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

My kelvinator upright freezer stopped freezing and it just kicks on and kicks right back of what could be wrong with it?

Start Relay/Overload or Compressor is bad. A bad compressor can make a Start Relay/Overload go bad but the only way to find out if compressor or Start Relay/Overload is bad is to replace the Start Relay/Overload if it starts and stays running you fixed it if Prob. returns in a week or so or if you have the same Prob. after replacing the relay the compressor is bad.

Fridge blowing air but seems warm

You probably have an issue with the compressor or components attached to the compressor (e.g.: relay, overload and capacitor (if applicable)). Contact an appliance service company.

GE side by side Model GSS25JFMD 2 yrs old. Original problem was not staying cold. now I see if I unplug for half hour it seems to work right but sometimes freezes in fridge . I'm hearing a clicking sound...

Hello,
These problems are saying relay/capacitor replacement and if that don't work then compressor replacement.
First change the relay and the compresssor cap. See if you have improvement...if not then you will need to have the compressor replaced.

Here is a tip about the relay and cap....

* compressor
* attachments to compressor (e.g.: relay, capacitor (if applicable) or overload protector)
* refrigerant (e.g.: restriction or leak)
* temperature control assembly

Fridge not cooling

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Refrigerator not cold . Motor keeps clicking on

Sounds like it is cycling on overload. Condenser coils (may be on back, or under bottom of fridge) may need cleaning. If coils are under bottom, it could be the condenser fan not working, causing it (compressor) to overload. Possibly compressor start relay bad. Worse case, compressor may be bad. If you don't know much about electrical stuff (compressor, relay, etc...) you should have a repair tech check it for you. If coils are dirty, clean them with a vac and coil brush (gently). You can get coil brushes at most hardware stores (Lowes, Home Dep, Ace, etc...) Hope this helps.

Fridge has stopped working/getting cold

check the relay, the clicking noise is your overload tripping out on overload, the run winding of the compressor are not coming on line, if your relay is good, the ohm out your compressor.

My fridge won't cool

fan blowing around compressor area is good, is the compressor itself hot??? sounds as if the overload/relay/starter. might have failed, its ploggd into the side of compressoe and acts as a thermal overload to protect the compressor from going bad, id try pulling it off adn give it a shake, if tis bad youll know right away itll be burnt up inside.
