Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a GE model GBS22KBRBBB refrigerator with bottom freezer that is just over 5 years old. I got home from work, and it was completely dead, other than the interior lights. There were no sounds at all coming from the unit. Knowing nothing about refrigerators, I started looking for any obvious signs of wiring issues or damage. On the control board, I found a tall black piece with 4 vertical fins on it, that says WARNING HIGH VOLTAGE next to it. There is a much smaller black piece screwed to that one. It looks as if a piece of the smaller unit was blown off, as there was a small chunk of plastic missing from it and just a little bit of black powder near it (thankfully this part next to it was yellow so the black powder showed up or I would have never noticed it!) In trying to get ANYTHING to work, I tried the advice of using a jumper wire on the blue plug from line 1 to line 3, and the compressor starting humming away, making normal refrigerator sounds. Is there anything else I should check before replacing the control board? I just dont want it to blow again as soon as I put another board in, since they're not cheap! Thanks for any help!!

Hello,

If you find the lights in your refrigerator do not work and the refrigerator has shut down, check for the power supply. You need to see if the refrigerator is plugged in properly. Also check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. See if there is any damage to the electrical cord and check the outlet voltage.

Take care.

Hi GE top freezer fridge - 5 years old( no ice

Well for one thing that unit was manufactured 10 years ago. But it sounds like the defrost drain is clogged and the water is running down the inside of the unit. The evaporator (not condenser) is on the bottom of the freezer compartment. The bottom panel of the freezer comes out. They are a bit of a pain to do, but can be done.

No, it is not a failed condenser. You need to see if the compressor is running though. When it runs you shaould have a fan in the freezer running, a fan underneath the fridge running, and the compressor should be running. I would be willing to bet that either the compressor is bad, or the start relay on the compressor.

G.E. Side by side model quit dispensing water. The refrigerator door was not completely closed overnight. Is is possible the water line froze since the freezer had to run so much

It is possible the water line inside the freezer door froze . Remove the bottom kick plate and follow the white tubing about 6" to a coupling . Push in on the white ring and at the same time , pullout on the tubing . Push the water dispensor , and if water comes out of the hose going under the fridge , this means the line is frozen in the door . If no water comes out , it means the water tank at the bottom of the fridge section (behind crispers ) is probably frozen . A hair dryer should work on the tank , but , a different procedure will be needed to thaw the door . Come back if door is frozen for the procedure .

Model gss25wg. 5 years old. Worked fine when we got it home. Now

Try to remove rear wall of freezer to check frost pattern. An even but light patter of frost on full coil is normal. Coils full of frost with aluminum almost fully hidden generally means defrost problem. Heavier frost on the bottom coils and gradually tapering off as you go up until the top coils have no frost usually means a leak of freon or a bad compressor.
