Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have two (2) GE refrigerators. I leave my 1st house for three (3) months to go south. Should I empty and unplug the refrigerators to save on electric costs? Is it worth it? One: GE 18.2 cu. ft, freezer over frig., TBX18SA. Second: GE TPH21PBS, side by side, 20.2 cu. ft. First is in unheated, attached garage. Second is in kitchen. Thank you.

You can try to turn off your refrigerator from time to time but the biggest problem you are going to run into will have to do with remembering to turn it back on before it gets too warm and the food spoils.

Honestly it isn't something we would recommend. Instead you can turn the temp down a bit and make sure that it is always full with either food or gallon sized full water bottles to maintain the temperature inside even after opening the the door.

Just be really careful with lowering the temperature too much because the food can spoil. Instead try to keep it at the temperature that the instruction manual suggests.

However, as you would moving outside for 3 months, you could switch that OFF. Refrigerator plays a major part in chunk of your electricity bill ( on an average 16% ). So, on daily basis it is not advisable, but for 3 months it is recommended.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

The fridge in the rental house will be empty and not in use for over a month. Can I unplug it or I should keep it running? Will unplugging it damage the compressor?

No it will not damage the compressor. It is worse on a refrigerator in they loss power and get power back, as in an electrical power outage. Than to leave with no power on. Be sure to leave the door open so it does start smelling.

We are snow birds and want to know what is best for the frig, un-plug it fo the 6 months or leave it plugged in? Thanks for your help

If you are leaving for six months I would empty everything out and then unplug a 2x4 or something like that in the door to keep it open a bit so it stays aired out while you are gone...

Built in freezer compartment only gets cold on right side and some on back, not left side, bottom or top. Is it fixable or do we replace refrigerator....GE Model GMS10AAMLWW

Try defrosting it for a day or 2, could be ice build up on the coils, just empty it, unplug and leave the door open, have something handy to wipe the water up with as it thaws out.

About replacement filters in refrigerator

grand, on this model the filter is designed to be used for up to 8 hours of open valve time or one year of calendar time. In other words if it takes you 8 seconds to fill a glass, that would be 8 seconds of open valve time. When 90% of the filter time elapses, either open valve time or calendar time, (which ever comes first) the main control board will indicate the amber light. When 100% elapses, the light will go red. As far as would have to give GE a back
