Question about Roper RAX7244KQ Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a Roper RAX7724KQ. It makes a gear stripping noise while going through the spin cycle. I already replaced the motor coupler. Could it be the transmission?

Thank you. Is it an easy task or even worth it to try to replace a transmission?

  • jasonswinton Sep 11, 2010

We have a new deveopment. I tried what you suggested about running the spin cycle with the lid open. I found that the machine is not spinning and the agitator is spinning ever so slowly. Is there still a problem with the transmission? I replaced the agitator 2 yrs ago.

Your suspicion is confirmed. It's definitely the transmission. There are no gears in the machine where the gear stripping noise might come from except the transmission and the agitator dog ears. Run a spin cycle with the lid open but have the lid switch acivated by pressing on it. If the noise is not coming from the agitator then it must be coming from the transmission.

It's definitely worth replacing since it can make the machine work again for another decade or more but this is the mother of all repairs as it requires total tear down of the machine. You may require the service of a qualified technician but it worth.

If the noise is not coming from the agitator then it must be coming from the transmission. Still a transmission problem.

Roper washing machine is not agitating. Makes a horrendous noise when supposed to be aggitating. No noise when filling with water.

Hello,

In addation to the agitation does it make the same noise in spin??
If yes it makes that same noise in spin the problem is going to be a broken motor coupler. I have written this tip about a broken motor coupler it will show ya how to take apart the washer and replace the coupler. http://www1.fixya.com/support/r10293994-whirlpool_made_washer_not_agatating

The washer is not spinning well...Clothes are partly wet when cycle is completely off...it used also to leak at one time where we can see some water when the cycle is complete...

Hello, when the clothes are partly wet when cycle is complete then check these.
1. Motor coupler
2. Spin cycle

MOTOR COUPLER; To test the motor coupler, restart the washer in it's spin cycle, let the machine runs for a minutes and then open the lid and notice if the tub is spinning: if it's spinning when you lift the lid that means the coupler is fine and if it doesn't spin that means you have to replace it.
SPIN CYCLE: If the washer doesn't reach it's proper spin speed, the cloth may be wet at the end of the cycle, check to be if the load is properly balanced and run a spin cycle again,if the clothes are still wet, you may have a worn or loose belt which you have to replace.
Thanks

Roper washer RAX4232PQO doesn't agitate or spin

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is a common problem that usually occurs through normal wear and tear. Replacement couplers are more resilient and resist breaking much better. If the washer will fill, will not agitate or spin, but will still drain, these are the symptoms of a broken motor coupling. The accompanying noise of the motor engaging and a rattling/grinding sound is also a common symptom. This is a very simple and inexpensive repair. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The part number is included in the link I provided. You can purchase a replacement on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: Roper is manufactured by Whirlpool and uses Whirlpool parts, so these instructions will apply.

Roper RAX4232KQ0 maker loud noise at spin cycle and then stops

There are a few things that can go wrong, If the washer doesn't adgitate or spin then probably the coupler is broken, lean the washer back and look under the machine between the motor and transmission you will find the coupler. (very common)

Coupler Part# 285753A $22.95

If its agitating but not spinning, check the lid switch, (easy check just listen for the click when you shut the lid, Or you can bypass it with a jumper wire under the console there are only 2 screw that hold the console down they are philips and either located in the front lower corners or the back lower corners)

Lid switch Part# 3949247 $42.95

If lid switch is good and the motor still doesnt run you might have a bad timer (RARE)
Timer Part# 3954563 $95.95

If you can hear the motor running but its not spinning and you have rulled out the coupler then your probably looking at a clutch (common problem) either the clutch isnt grabbing or the brake isnt releasing both problems solved with the clutch kit

Clutch kit Part# 285785 $44.95

Worst case your looking at a transmission, (uncommon) to rule out, make sure its agitating, then put washer in spin cycle. look under the washer to see if the clutch bell is spinning. if its not then you will need a transmission.

Trans Part# 3360629 $172.95

if its making loud noises when it stops spinnig then the block is bad.

Block Part# 389140 $14.95

Motor is humming loudly.

Motors hum, and your right, it could be no worse than normal.

I would be suspect that there is a gear stripped in the gearcase, since this is a direct drive washing machine.

Reassemble the motor back onto the washer. Run it through a cycle manually (rotate the timer by hand) until the motor turns, then look to see if it's turning. If it is, or even more so, if it pumps water out of the tub, then it is probably the stripped out gearcase.

Reply with you findings and more advice.

Clothes washer just makes a noise like a gear spinning ?

I was having the same problem with mine so I took it apart. There is a plastic coupler-like device that connects the drive motor to shaft which allows your "spin" cycle to commence. This coupler has posts in side it but they are under the little belt. My posts were all broken so the bottom piece of the coupler was spinning but the top was not, so it just made a humming noise. When replacing direct motor coupler not enough?

Gear case part # 3360629 retails for about $170.
This dosn't happen very often.
You can find a junk whirlpool, roper, kenmore or kitchen-aid and pull the motor and gear case to save $$$$$

Washer makes a loud noise while trying to spin

The problem most likely what it sounds like is the motor coupler which cost somewhere around 20 bucks from a repair store or parts place. the motor coupler sits between the motor and the transmission and transfers motion from one to the other if its making a loud clicking sound that sounds like gears then thats it and you'll be surprised to see that its simply made out of rubber and plastic. Its a little bit of an advanced repair make sure to unplug the washer because u will have to drop the motor off to take the coupler off the transmission parts required flattip phillips head 1/4 nutdrive and something to put over the coupler to bang onto the motor and to the transmission. Gl its really not that hard a professional can do it in about 15 minutes it might take u an hour maybe make sure to take the whole cabinet off do not try to take it apart from the back
