Formating the disk deletes EVERYTHING on that disk partition and sets it up for the installation of an operating system (XP, VISTA, LINUX etc).
If that is what you want, you will need your operating system disk. It will have the option to delete the current partition and install the "new" system. When you delete the partition, again, all the information on that partition is deleted.
Follow the instructions on your recovery disk and it will lead you thru these steps.
