Hi there.most likely the heads are dirty, run a head cleaner tape through it a few times and that should sort the problem,or leave an old tape to play for a while, and a picture will slowly appear.. regards, steve

vhs either has the picture circuit out or the heads are way too dirty to work. you can clean the heads on these it is pretty easy, if you would like to know how you can let me know.

When I play DVD's my tv screen gets a rectangle box on it, the VHS is fine, it's just the DVD player.

Yes! you are right, this almost sounds like a captions problem, check the DVD/VCR Combo menu, if it has captions turn it off using your remote.

Can't get video on vhs sound but no picture, is it broken

I had the same problem, so I took it back to basics. Hooked cable into VCR/DVD player and another cable from player to TV. S cable too, plus red/white audio. Plays DVDs on AV1 and VHS on Channel 3 on TV setting.

VHS won't play

If it's showing a welcome screen, the DVD is on. The VHS won't show a welcome screen. Some machines are a little tricky because they want to start in the DVD mode. I would concentrate in that area.

Make sure that your external devices are PAL. If they are sending out the NTSC standard, the picture will be there without color as you are seeing.

Connect DVD recorder to Video player/recorder- transfer VHStodisc

hook the video output from vcr to dvd input at rear, then hook output from dvd to tv input. note; you can not record protected vcr movies you can only record tv shows from sattelite to vcr or dvd recorder. its best to record straight from sattelite to dvd recorder for picture clarity.
