I think you've actually diagnosed your problem. Get that fan moving and you'll probably make this go away. Rubbermaid has a website and decent customer service. If you're in warranty...go there first.

A generic plug should work...just be sure to size the fuse correctly to protect the unit. Most thermoelectric units draw about 4 to 5 amps...so a 10 amp fuse usually works.
