Question about Buffalo Technology 750GB USB SATA 2.0 HD DS 750 GB Hard Drive

3 Answers

I just bought two 1 terabyte buffalo drives. My laptop only recognizes one at a time. Why? Is it because they show as USB-Sata bridge? How can I see both at once.

Thank you. I am, indeed using Windows 7.0 Home Premium, but the fix didn't work. I then tried forcing drive letter name M: on the drive connected.Same problem. One drive works, but the other isn't recognized. It is recognized in Devices and Printers as USB-Sata Bridge, but with no Browse and drive name. And, whichever drive is attached, it comes up as drive letter M:

I'm in an "only one may be active" situation.

This is the first time I've seen my USB drives listed as USB-Sata Bridge. Hmmm... Any more ideas?

    Thank you Marcus

I'll wait for your next idea (and keep trying stuff). It's a stumper. I don't know why the drives sign on as sata bridges rather than mass storage devices. The problem is there somewhere, but it's a new one on me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you. I was thinking about that. I'll give it a try.

Hi, I put a powered hub on. No cigar. Still the same thing. But thank you for the suggestion. Any other ideas? Larry

  • lbrouhard Sep 13, 2010

How do you do and thank you.

Yes, both drives are powered. I've also tried running them through a powered hub. Same problem. Each works individually, but when both are connected, only one is recognized as a drive. I've never had this kind of problem before. Also, this is the first time I've had drives that showed up as a bridge rather than a mass storage device. Hmmm....

Where should I check my usb settings? Thanks again.

Hi. Do you have any other ideas? I'd sure like to get both drives working at the same time.

    Hi MagT,

Your suggestion didn't directly fix the problem but it led to the solution. A million thanks. I did as you requested and repartitioned one of the disks and rebooted.

The problem was not resolved, but in disk management under Computer Management, I noticed that the second disk was off line with a flag that said it had a registration conflict with another drive. When I clicked "online" it cleared the problem and came up.

    Shouts of joy.

Then, because I wanted both drives to be the same, I deleted the partitions I had made in the previous drive, assigned drive letters, rebooted and am now walking in tall cotton.

The reason I bought two 1 tera drives is that my previous 1 tera suddenly quit, leaving me in the doo doo for almost a terabyte of video work. Poop. 40 years in the business and I still never learn.

To keep that from happening again, I'll always keep each of the 1 tera's identical with the other.

So, next time someone has this problem, have them check if the drive appears as "System Reserved" and off line. I don't know if that was the case before I partitioned one of the drives, but the suggestion in the future might be:

    1. Under Disk Management, check if one of the drives is System Reserved and Off line. If so, click Online.
    2. If not, repartition one of the drives, reboot and check again.

Thanks again for your help. I'm back in business.

USB-sata bridge only shows you the interfacing connection element that is being used. what i would suggest is that you check your USB ports settings depending on your laptop model. also if i may ask, does that 1 terabyte buffalo drive have external power? if not, then you should know that due to power limitations on the USB ports, it may not be possible to load both drives at the same time because this would exceed the available power for the ports. and hence the other drive will not be loaded.

Hi.

Rather than the SATA bridge, which can manage more than one device, the problem is likely the excessive power draw required to keep the two disks on.Try putting a powered USB hub in the middle, that should fix the problem: USB2HUB-7P-1V

Not knowing your OS I'm going to give you Windows 7 instructions.

1. Connect one of the external drives
2. Go to the Start Button and click.
3. In the little search box at the bottom type Administrative
4. Go up the list you see and click on Admistrative tools
5. In the window that opens, double click Computer Management
6. In the left pane window click once on Disk Management
7. In the new window, right click on your external drive and then go down the drop down menu and click on Properties
8. You should see your drive's name highlighted in blue.
9. Rename the drive, click Apply and OK
10 Restart your computer
11. Attach the 2nd drive and you should now see both

    Hi Larry,

I have to apologize and admit that at this point I'm stumped, which means I can't stand to not know the answer. I'm also buried with local clients all day but I intend to get back to this again tomorrow and see if I can track down a bullet proof solution if you don't find it first.

    Regards,

    Hi Marcus,
I'm still looking for a solution. I've tried using a powered hub -- no change. Do you have any new ideas?

Hi Larry,I've been incredibly busy but wanted to get back to you. I came across the mention somewhere that you might try taking one of the drives and installing a partition or two instead of them just both being one big partition each. This might create a distinction the laptop can recognize.

Shows up as "Initio Combo Device Class" not a "Disk Drive"

RESOLVED the ISSUE...!!

Hi, Yesterday I get into similar problem of having my USB Drive ( WD passport Elite 320gb ) not being detected by my PC and as soon as I connect to it, Initio Combo device class drivers gets loaded and Drive do not show up in the device list...!!
I tried several options.1. Freezed my hard drive for 12 hrs in the freezer. It did not help me today.2. I have opened the USB drive shell ( becareful, I have damaged it.. see the instructions before you try t ). You can find the 2.5' HDD inside and there will be SATA to USB bridge adapter. I was having doubt on this bridge unit as I read through several blogs.3. luckily I have a unused 2.5' Laptop HDD. So I have removed this bridge unit carefully and tried to connect to my HDD. If the bridge is good, my HDD must be detected right away..But it is the same problem.. It did not work.. Hence I have confirmed that it is the bridge problem..
4. I bought a Rs. 250/- ( 5$ ) 2.5 SATA casing that is available in the market to use the 2.5' SATA HDD through USB. ( actually I do not know where I can buy only the bridge..hence bought the entire unit..which is still cheaper )
5. From the new unit, I have the USB to SATA bridge, which I have connected to my WD HDD SATA USB hard drive... Bingo.........It is detected by OS and I have started copying my important data immediately...
6. This Unit comes with a casing ..hence you may continue using this case... But some units may not fit well..still the bridge is usable..!!

I GOT all my data..with just Rs.250/- ( $5 ) ..I am happy to try this on my own..!!

Good luck with your drive..!!

My buffalo combo 4 2 TB wont show up on my xbox 360. I already have it formated FAT32

The Xbox 360 can only recognize drives up to 16GB as noted on their website, I myself have tried a 32GB flash drive to test the limitations and it was not recognized. At this time it seems as though microsoft is limiting their external storage to 16GB.

I have an acer aspire 5100 I want to use a USB 1 terabyte

Assuming it's xp or newer,it should just work. Now if this is an older version of windows, like '98,there's a limit on how big a drive can be. You may need to format & partition the drive using 3rd party software that should've comw with the drive.

External Buffalo Hard Disk 500 Gb model no HD-PF500U2/BK-AP not detecting when connnected to a laptop or a desktop PC

Check the usb port function in the computer bios settings and be sure that it is set to yes. Connect properly your external drive. If it has two wire usb connections, use both to obtain the maximum power that will be need by your drive.

Hey Pete,

Why don't you try plugging it into another USB port?

Bought a new LaCie drive; isn't recognized by mac or pc

Lacie Porsche drives in my experience or infamous for not having the most durable bridge boards. The bridge board is a chip that has a chipset on it which take the SATA or PATA connection and send it to the USB and or Firewire ports on the enclosure. If the drive is powered up, you should get a small red or orange light on the front. When connected to either mac or pc ( porsches are MS_DOS formatted out the box ), if it does not mount or does not appear in DISK UTILTY, then it is a high probability that the enclosure/bridge board has failed and the drive ( if not making grinding, buzzing, clicking or beeping sounds) will have to be extracted and placed into a more stable enclosure. Hope this helps.
